The design of artificial molecular machines often takes inspiration from macroscopic machines. However, the parallels between the two systems are often only superficial, because most molecular machines are governed by quantum processes. Previously, rotary molecular motors powered by light and chemical energy have been developed. In electrically driven motors, tunnelling electrons from the tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope have been used to drive the rotation of a simple rotor in a single direction and to move a four-wheeled molecule across a surface. Here, we show that a stand-alone molecular motor adsorbed on a gold surface can be made to rotate in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction by selective inelastic electron tunnelling through different subunits of the motor. Our motor is composed of a tripodal stator for vertical positioning, a five-arm rotor for controlled rotations, and a ruthenium atomic ball bearing connecting the static and rotational parts. The directional rotation arises from sawtooth-like rotational potentials, which are solely determined by the internal molecular structure and are independent of the surface adsorption site.

Alloys of Ag and small amounts of Pd are promising as bifunctional catalysts, potentially combining the inherent selectivity of the noble Ag with that of the more reactive Pd. Stable PdAg surface alloys are prepared via evaporation of Pd onto Ag(111) at room temperature followed by annealing at 400 K to create a model system. Using this procedure, the most stable form of the surface alloy under vacuum was determined to be a Ag-capped PdAg surface alloy, on the basis of a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and density functional theory (DFT). Extensive roughening of the surface was apparent in STM images, characterized by islands of the Ag/PdAg/Ag(111) alloy of several layers thickness. The roughening is attributed to transport of Ag from the Ag(111) surface into the alloy islands. Within these islands, there is a driving force for Pd to be dispersed, surrounded by Ag, on the basis of DFT modeling. Exposure of these Ag/PdAg/Ag(111) islands to CO (0.5 Torr) at 300 K induces migration of Pd to the surface, driven by the energetic stabilization of the Pd−CO bond based on ambient-pressure XPS. Once the Pd is drawn to the surface by higher pressures of CO at room temperature, it remains stable even under very low CO partial pressures at temperatures of 300 K and below, on the basis of DFT-modeled phase behavior. Exposure to 1 Torr of O 2 at 400 K also causes Pd to resurface, and the resulting structure persists even at low pressures and temperatures below 300 K. These results establish that the state of the PdAg catalyst surface depends strongly on pretreatment and operational conditions. Hence, exposure of an alloy catalyst to CO or O 2 at moderate temperatures and pressures can lead to catalyst activation by bringing Pd to the surface. Furthermore, these results demonstrate that exposure to CO at room temperature, which is often used as a proxy for evaluating the Pd coordination sites available in a catalyst, changes the surface structure. Therefore, the CO vibrational frequencies measured with diffuse-reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) on PdAg catalyst materials do not necessarily provide information about their working state, and fundamental understanding of the CO-PdAg alloy is crucial.

A range of artificial molecular systems has been created that can exhibit controlled linear and rotational motion. In the further development of such systems, a key step is the addition of communication between molecules in a network. Here, we show that a two-dimensional array of dipolar molecular rotors can undergo simultaneous rotational switching when applying an electric field from the tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope. Several hundred rotors made from porphyrin-based double-decker complexes can be simultaneously rotated when in a hexagonal rotor network on a Cu(111) surface by applying biases above 1 V at 80 K. The phenomenon is observed only in a hexagonal rotor network due to the degeneracy of the ground-state dipole rotational energy barrier of the system. Defects are essential to increase electric torque on the rotor network and to stabilize the switched rotor domains. At low biases and low initial rotator angles, slight reorientations of individual rotors can occur, resulting in the rotator arms pointing in different directions. Analysis reveals that the rotator arm directions are not random, but are coordinated to minimize energy via crosstalk among the rotors through dipolar interactions.

Heterogeneous catalysts are complex materials with multiple interfaces. A critical proposition in exploiting bifunctionality in alloy catalysts is to achieve surface migration across interfaces separating functionally dissimilar regions. Herein, we demonstrate the enhancement of more than 10 4 in the rate of molecular hydrogen reduction of a silver surface oxide in the presence of palladium oxide compared to pure silver oxide resulting from the transfer of atomic hydrogen from palladium oxide islands onto the surrounding surface formed from oxidation of a palladium-silver alloy. The palladium-silver interface also dynamically restructures during reduction, resulting in silver-palladium intermixing. This study clearly demonstrates the migration of reaction intermediates and catalyst material across surface interfacial boundaries in alloys with a significant effect on surface reactivity, having broad implications for the catalytic function of bimetallic materials.

By using synchrotron X-rays as a probe and a nanofabricated smart tip of a tunneling microscope as a detector, we have achieved chemical fingerprinting of individual nickel clusters on a Cu(111) surface at 2 nm lateral resolution, and at the ultimate single-atomic height sensitivity. Moreover, by varying the photon energy, we have succeeded to locally measure photoionization cross sections of just a single Ni nanocluster, which opens new exciting opportunities for chemical imaging of nanoscale materials.

The reaction of CO and O 2 with submonolayer and multilayer CoO x films on Pt(111), to produce CO 2 , was investigated at room temperature in the mTorr pressure regime. Using operan do ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high pressure scanning tunneling microscopy, as well as density functional theory calculations, we found that the presence of oxygen vacancies in partially oxidized CoO x films significantly enhances the activity of CO oxidation to form CO 2 upon exposure to mTorr pressures of CO at room temperature. In contrast, CoO films without O-vacancies are much less active for CO 2 formation at RT, and CO only adsorbed in the form of carbonate species stable up to 260° C. On submonolayer CoO x islands, the carbonates form preferentially at island edges, deactivating the edge sites for CO 2 formation, even while the reaction proceeds inside the islands. These results provide a detailed understanding of CO oxidation pathways on systems where noble metals such as Pt interact with reducible oxides. ASSOCIATED CONTENTSupporting Information. Using ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS) and high pressure scanning tunneling microscopy (HPSTM), we show that in equilibrium with 0.01-0.2 Torr of methanol vapor, at room temperature, the Cu(100) surface is covered with methoxy species forming a c(2 × 2) overlayer structure. In contrast, no methoxy is formed if the surface is saturated with an ordered oxygen layer, even when the methanol pressure is 0.2 Torr. At oxygen coverages below saturation, methanol dissociates and reacts with the atomic oxygen, producing methoxy and formate on the surface, and formaldehyde that desorbs to the gas phase. Unlike the case of pure carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, methanol does not induce the restructuring of the Cu(100) surface. These results provide insight into catalytic anhydrous production of aldehydes.

Kondo resonances in heterostructures formed by magnetic molecules on a metal require free host electrons to interact with the molecular spin and create delicate many-body states. Unlike graphene, semiconducting graphene nanoribbons do not have free electrons due to their large bandgaps, and thus they should electronically decouple molecules from the metal substrate. Here, we observe unusually well-defined Kondo resonances in magnetic molecules separated from a gold surface by graphene nanoribbons in vertically stacked heterostructures. Surprisingly, the strengths of Kondo resonances for the molecules on graphene nanoribbons appear nearly identical to those directly adsorbed on the top, bridge and threefold hollow sites of Au(111). This unexpectedly strong spin-coupling effect is further confirmed by density functional calculations that reveal no spin–electron interactions at this molecule-gold substrate separation if the graphene nanoribbons are absent. Our findings suggest graphene nanoribbons mediate effective spin coupling, opening a way for potential applications in spintronics.
