This research seeks to understand the perceptions that non-university teachers have about educational research. In order to do so, a qualitative study was carried out passing a semi-structured interview to twenty experienced teaches (ten from Primary, ten from Secondary Education, half of them familiarized with research, the other half, not familiarized with initiated). The results, consistent with other studies, suggest that teachers are very critical of educational research because they question the quality of research, the usefulness of the results, the way in which research is written as well as the language used to make it public. Also, teachers see the topics investigated as irrelevant and indicate teacher training as one of the elements that influences their perceptions. There is also a critical look at the researcher, whom they see as a person who stands away from the reality of the classroom.
ABSTRACT This article presents a research that seeks to identify the perception of in training-Primary Education teachers regarding the educational research. To develop this research, a qualitative study with a phenomenographic approach was applied to twenty students of the Elementary Education Program from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. The results, in contrast to previous studies, suggest that future teachers perceive research as important and necessary in their profession and value positively the work of researchers. However, they believe that the training they receive in terms of research should be better and more useful for their teaching performance.
The objectives of this study were to explore teacher student’s views on the research training they receive and know their suggestions for improving it. This was a qualitative study conducted on students in the teacher training programs of a Chilean public university who were distributed into nine focus groups. The findings showed that the students have a rather critical view about the training they receive, particularly due to the lack of continuity of research-related courses and their limited participation in research activities. Regarding how to improve their training, the students suggest providing one research-related course each year, having researchers as teachers, and giving greater visibility to the educational research produced within their university. The study concludes that it is important to promote participation in educational research and that university teacher educators and the entire university community must adopt a broad-ranging view on this subject.
This article analyzes the main obstacles that the relationship between educational research and teachers faces. It assumes the presence of a widening gap which is taking them along distant and almost antagonistic paths that do not favor the progress of education. The characteristics of five "invisible walls" that interpose between both concepts are exposed: research as a kind of knowledge built between four walls and away from the everyday reality of teachers, the useless topics chosen by researchers, the lack of research training of teachers, the poor results of the studies and the specialized language in which the research is communicated. The article ends with some reflections and suggestions to overcome these walls and achieve a more conciliatory discourse between researchers and teachers.
