Crops belonging to the Brassica genus are widely grown in turkey. Cabbages are one of the most important Brassica vegetable crops in turkey. the aim of this study was to determine similarities and differences regarding morphological variation of white head cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata subvar. alba) genetic resources collected from different eco-geographical regions of turkey. Data from field experiments conducted between 1999 and 2001 were analysed by multiple variance analysis. Cluster analysis based on 12 quantitative and 10 qualitative variables identified 10 groups. The dendogram was prepared to evaluate morphological similarity between the white head cabbage genotypes. Morphological variability is high among the white head cabbage genotypes of turkey. As a conclusion, the genotypes evaluated in this study display a wide diversity of characters for selection and combination of interesting genotypes for important characters to obtain improved varieties.
This study carried out to determine morphological traits of new experimental hybrids of cabbage and their parents. To determine morphological variability among tested hybrids and parents, they were analyzed for 34 morphological traits using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Cluster Analysis (CA). Results of the PCA indicated that the first three principal components accounted for 39.76% of the total variability among the 28 cabbage hybrids and 45.34% of the total variability among 22 cabbage parents for all the traits investigated. The first principal component (PC1) were the most important component and cabbage traits that constitute the PC1 (such as plant height, plant diameter, weight of head, diameter of head and length of head) were in fact the characteristics considered by breeders to be of greatest importance in cabbage breeding. At the result of CA, the cabbage hybrids were divided into eleven clusters and the cabbage parents were divided into nine clusters. PCA and CA confirmed that the cabbage hybrids and their parents were highly variable and had principally a significant variation for yield and yield components.ÖZET: Bu çalışma, yeni deneysel beyaz baş lahana hibritleri ve onların ebeveynlerinin morfolojik özelliklerini belirlemek için yürütülmüştür. Hybrids and parents were evaluated in a randomized block design with three replications. Measurements were performed for head weight, head diameter and head length to estimate mid parent and better parent heterosis in each hybrid. The direction and magnitude of mid parent and better parent heterosis among hybrids for all the head traits was found to be highly variable. The maximum and significant heterosis in favorable directions both over mid parent and better parent for head weight (73.6 and 62.3%, respectively), head diameter (39.6 and 39.1%, respectively) and head length (25.3 and 21.6%, respectively) was observed in the hybrid P8 × P14. In this study, the hybrids P8 × P14, P3 × P13, P3 × P14 and P8 × P13 were found to be promising hybrid combinations with regard to their per se performance for head traits and the magnitude of heterosis. These hybrids can be selected for commercial exploitation of hybrid vigor. Thus, the information generated from this study might be vital and useful for breeders to develop hybrid varieties with better head traits and high yield through heterosis breeding.
This research aims to determine the morphological characteristics of different hybrid varieties in red head cabbage varieties, which has an important share in vegetable production, in Samsun province. In this study carried out at the Black Sea Agricultural Research Institute, 15 hybrid varieties were examined in terms of 28 different characteristics. Significant variations were observed in terms of the characteristics studied among hybrid varieties. Plant length varied between 36.33-57.67 cm, plant width varied between 61.67-97.33 cm, head weight varied between 905.0-1693.33 g, length of outer leaf varied between 32.83-46.33 cm, the width of outer leaf varied between 21.5-37.33 cm, length of head varied between 13.67-18.83 cm, the diameter of head ranged from 11.53-14.67 cm, length of interior stem varied between 5.63-8.67 cm and diameter of interior stem varied between 2.33-3.83 cm. It was found that the outer leaves covered the upper part of the head, the hardness of the head was very tight, the shape of the head was broad obovate, and the outer leaves of the heads had a dark violet color. The period from seedling planting to the maturation of the heads varied 68 to 125 days, and all varieties remained in the field for a long time without cracking. Yaldız is determined as the best variety in head weight, head length, and head diameter, traits correlated with cabbage yield. In addition, the highest plant height was observed in Caballero variety, and the highest plant width was observed in Red Taste variety. Remala is determined as the earliest variety, and Red Charisma is determined as the latest variety. It is thought that the varieties that become prominent in terms of head weight, head shape, head color characteristics in red head cabbage can be evaluated in hybridization and variety development studies.
