The photochemical reaction between 9,lO-phenanthrenequinone and 1,4-dioxane, in which the product species as well as the reactant absorb light in the wavelength range of the light source, was studied theoretically and experimentally for an annular reactor with a polychromatic center-line light source. The reaction rate expressions developed for this case of reactant and product absorption predict conversions as a function of time similar to those obtained experimentally. The experimental results were characterized by a high, constant initial reaction rate followed by a falling rate which reached zero at high conversions. Deviations between the experimental and predicted results can be explained by the hydrodynamic regime in the reactor and the presence of low concentrations of air or water in the system.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
