The study was conducted to measure the development of several testicular characteristics and to investigate the relationship between testicular parameters with body growth, semen characteristics and serum testosterone levels in growing ram lambs. Seventeen single born Kivircik ram lambs from three to four year old ewes were used. When the rams were two months old measurements of the length, diameter and circumference of their testes and body weights started, and blood samples were collected at 20-day intervals for the next 12 months. From seven to 14 months of age semen was collected at monthly intervals. There was a gradual and linear increase in testicular dimensions from two to 11 months of age. A rapid increase in all testicular dimensions was observed between 140 to 160 days of age. All measurements of testes, live weight, age and serum testosterone concentrations were positively and significantly correlated with each other. While a significant positive correlation was found at seven and eight months of age between all testicular measurements and semen volume and motility, no such correlations were observed between nine and 14 months of age. From seven to 14 months of age no correlation was measured between serum testosterone concentrations and spermatological characteristics. These results demonstrated that testicular measurements, especially scrotal circumference, can be used as criteria for early selection of ram lambs to be used in breeding at relatively young ages.
Oxidative stress was minimally induced with oral therapy, while IM and IV therapies induced higher levels of oxidative stress, in increasing order of intensity.
OBJECTIVE:Cigarette smoking carries higher risks for most of the chronic diseases. It also has chronic and acute effects on the hematologic system. This study explores the effects of cigarette smoking on some blood values of the healthy young male smokers.METHODS:In this study, cigarette smoking and usage of substance, additional diseases, birth places, and education levels of 171 healthy male subjects between the ages of 20 and 30 years were investigated. Anthropometric measurements of the cases were obtained. Thyroid function tests, vitamin B12, folic acid, ferritin, ferrous/ıron, total ıron binding capacity, leucocytes, platelets, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean platelet volume (MPV), HBs AG, Anti-HBs and Anti-HIV were evaluated. Groups of smokers and nonsmokers were compared. The group of smokers was also sorted into subgroups of “2 year-smokers”, “5 year-smokers” and “10 year-smokers” according to their pack-years of smoking. The effects of pack-years of smoking on the blood values were also investigated.RESULTS:The MCV values of the group of smokers were higher than the values of nonsmokers, which were statistically significant (p<0.05). As a result of the subgroup analyses of smokers, the white blood cell (WBC) counts of the individuals smoking for 5 or more years were significantly higher than those with a history of smoking less than 5 years, (p<0.05).CONCLUSION:This study supports the idea that cigarette smoking and especially longer durations of smoking have adverse effects on the hematologic parameters.
Sex cord-stromal tumors with annular tubules (SCTAT) of the ovary are rare. They have two clinical presentation forms: the syndromic form, which is associated with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, and the non-syndromic form, which is frequently seen in the second or third decades. We describe a 13-year-old patient who underwent left oophorectomy. Macroscopically, the mass was 16×13×8 cm in diameter, encapsulated, and lobulated. It showed a yellow-to-orange solid cut surface with small cystic areas and hemorrhagic cleft-like spaces. Microscopically, the tumor had nodular areas that were separated with fibrous stroma. They were composed of tubules, which were lined by columnar shaped cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm, nuclear palisading, and central Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS)-positive eosinophilic hyaline bodies. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were strongly positive for inhibin. Finally, the tumor was diagnosed as non-syndromic ovarian SCTAT.
