Amaç: Otizm spektrum bozukluğu (OSB) toplumsal iletişim ve etkileşimde güçlükler ile sınırlı, yineleyici davranış örüntülerinden oluşan nörogelişimsel bir bozukluktur. OSB oldukça sık rastlanan ciddi hastalıklardan biridir. Amerikan Psikiyatri Birliği'nin Haziran 2015 verilerine göre her 68 çocuktan birine OSB tanısı konmaktadır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışma tanımlayıcı tipte bir araştırmadır. Araştırmanın evreni, Adnan Menderes Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi 6. Sınıf öğrencilerinden oluşmuştur (n=167). Verilerin toplanmasında 45 sorudan oluşan bir anket formu kullanılmıştır. Anket sorularının belirlenmesinde DSM-5 tanı kriterleri, Değiştirilmiş Erken Çocukluk Dönemi Otizm Tarama Ölçeği ve Sağlık Çalışanları Arasında Çocukluk Çağı Otizmi Hakkında Bilgi Anketi'nden faydalanılmıştır. Bulgular: Çalışmaya 127 kişi katılmıştır. Çalışmaya katılan 127 kişiden 23'ü (%18,1) OSB'yi duymadığını belirtmiştir. Bilgi düzeyi açısından erkekler ve kadınlar arasında anlamlı fark bulunmamıştır (p=0,378). Katılımcıların 27'si (%21,1) çocuk psikiyatrisi stajı sırasında OSB olan hasta muayene ya da takibine katıldıklarını belirtmişlerdir ve katılanlar ile katılmayanlar arasında bilgi düzeyi açısından anlamlı fark tespit edilmiştir (p<0,001). Çalışmaya katılan beş öğrenciden biri OSB'yi duymadığını belirtmiştir. Bunun nedeni; anketin ilk sorusunda OSB'yi duyup duymama durumu sorgulanmış ve duymadığını belirtenlerin anketi sonlandırması istenmiştir. Çalışmaya ilgisiz olan katılımcıların bu seçeneği tercih etmiş olduğu öngörülebilir. OSB olan hasta muayene ya da takibine katılım bilgi kalıcılığı ve farkındalık açısından olumlu etki göstermektedir. Sonuç: OSB'nin giderek yaygınlaşması, bu hastalığı önemli bir halk sağlığı sorunu haline getirmiştir. Tıp fakültesi öğrencilerinin hasta muayene ve takibine katılımı üzerinde durulmalıdır. Sağlık çalışanlarına aralıklı eğitim seminerleri ve yenileme eğitimleri verilmelidir.
