Purpose
This study aims to present an empirical model related to strategic performance (SP) of the hospitality industry. It focuses on the role of network capability (NC) in defining SP through the mediating role of structural flexibility (SF). Furthermore, the interaction effect of NC and top management commitment to strategic performance (MCSP) on SP is also tested.
Design/methodology/approach
A sample of 279 managerial-level employees of four-star and five-star hotels has been used to confirm the proposed hypotheses by using the technique of structural equation modeling.
Findings
The results reveal that NC positively affects SP. Moreover, the mediating role of SF in defining the nexus of NC and SP has also been confirmed. Results of moderation analysis reveal that MCSP strengthens the relationship between NC and SP.
Research limitations/implications
This study used a cross-sectional design for data collection, which prevents strong causal inferences. The authors recommend scholars to explicitly test for causal effect. Practical implications
In developing countries, it has been observed that the hospitality industry pays less attention to its strategic targets. Operating in a network or adapting flexible structures is also not on their priority list. This study presents a pragmatic approach based on strong theoretical grounds to attain the goals of SP in the hospitality industry through NC and SF. Therefore, this study suggests that organization operating in the tourism and hospitality industry should pay greater attention toward synergies and business networks to achieve SP.
Originality/value
This research enriches the prevailing knowledge by testing a mediating role of SF between NC-SP link and, therefore, makes an important addition to the existing knowledge on tourism and hospitality industry by concentrating on the relationship between NC, SF, MCSP and SP.
According to the hypothesis of misperception of feedback, people's poor performance in renewable resource management tasks can be attributed to their general tendency to systematically misperceive the dynamics of bioeconomic systems. The thesis of this article is that dynamic decision performance can be improved by helping individuals develop more accurate mental models of renewable resource systems through training using computer simulation-based interactive learning environments (CSBILEs) that include debriefing. A laboratory experiment is reported in which participants managed a dynamic task by playing the roles of fishing fleet managers. One group of participants used a CSBILE with debriefing, and another group used the same CSBILE but without debriefing. A comprehensive model consisting of four evaluation criteria was developed and used. The evaluation criteria were task performance, structural knowledge, heuristics, and decision time. It was found that debriefing was effective on all four criteria: Debriefing improved task performance, helped users learn more about the decision domain and develop heuristics, and reduced decision time in dynamic decision making.
This survey study analyzed the existing literature on the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth in the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait). This study identified 59 articles published in 18 journals covering the period 2006–2019. The articles were grouped into two categories: the first category included studies analyzing the energy–growth relationship at the individual country level while the second category included studies analyzing the relationship at a multi-country level. The result of this study revealed that 18% of the observations supported the growth hypothesis, 26% supported the conservation hypothesis, 43% supported the feedback hypothesis and 13% supported the neutral hypothesis. As our analysis found a dominant support for the growth and feedback hypotheses, this implies that the focus of energy policies in GCC countries has been on the supply and the uninterrupted availability for the expansion and growth of their industrial and developmental activities. However, for a sustainable development and growth of the GCC economies and meeting the environmental challenges, there is an urgent need for the expansion of renewable energy technologies in the energy supply mix of GCC countries.
