A variable long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser was found to be effective in the treatment of different vascular lesions ranging from easy to difficult to treat. The authors have indicated no significant interest with commercial supporters.

Many aspects of the biology and effective therapy of proliferative scars remain undefined, in part due to a lack of an accurate, practical, reproducible, and economical animal model for systematically studying hypertrophic scars. This study was designed to investigate whether hypertrophic scar formation could be induced in guinea pigs by removal of the panniculus carnosus alone, and by a combination of the removal of the panniculus carnosus with application of coal tar afterwards. Whole thickness skin excision or deep partial thickness injury was used to create the lesions on intact skin. Different anatomic locations were tested in different groups. Scars thus developed were examined morphologically by light microscopy and electron microscopy (TEM and SEM) and biochemically by measuring the activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) to check whether these scars had morphological and biochemical properties specific to hypertrophic scars. The albino guinea pigs used in this study were divided into three groups. Removal of the panniculus carnosus was performed from the ventral aspect of the torso in animals in groups I and II. On the skin overlying the area of panniculectomy, circular skin excision was performed in group I, and deep partial thickness burn injury was inflicted in group II, to see whether wounds would heal with hypertrophic scars. In group III, dorsal aspect of the torso were used and wounds were produced by circular skin excisions followed by panniculectomy on both sides but coal tar was applied to only one side. Tissue samples were taken from the scars that were hypertrophic in appearance, and from normal scars and normal skin for comparison. Light and electron microscopic examinations and G6PD activity measurements were performed on these samples. While hypertrophic scar development was not seen in group I and group II, scars with morphological and biochemical properties specific to hypertrophic scars developed in one third of animals in group III after healing of the wounds treated with coal tar. In conclusion, it is shown that it is possible to develop experimental hypertrophic scars in guinea pigs with morphological and biochemical properties similar to those of human proliferative scars. Therefore this model is a new, practical, and economical experimental animal model to study proliferative scars, although improvements are needed to increase yield.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of cancer in Caucasians. This study was undertaken to define clinical features of BCC treated by surgical excision in Turkish patients. One-hundred and ninety-eight patients with 216 BCC, all treated by surgical excision, were studied prospectively. Age and sex distribution, personal and family history, skin type, site and size of the lesions, clinical type of the lesions, status of surgical margins and incidence of recurrence were analyzed. The male to female ratio was 9:10, and the average age of the patients was 64.5 years. Of the tumors, 91.5% occurred on the head and neck. There was also personal and/or family history of cancer in 24.8% of our cases. Of all BCC treated, 83.8% had a noduloulcerative clinical appearance. The vast majority of our patients were Fitzpatrick type 3 (53.0%) and type 2 (41.5%). There were seven recurrences after follow-up periods varying between 3 months and 2 years. In conclusion, clinical characteristics of BCC in Turkish patients have both similarities and differences compared with other countries.

The lateral foldplasty procedure alone or combined with limited lateral matrix resection is a cheap, simple, and satisfactory technique for the treatment of ingrown toenails with a low risk of relapse. This technique also has good cosmetic results.

A case report of aplasia cutis congenita of the vertex of the scalp associated with symbrachydactyly of both feet is presented. The Adams-Oliver syndrome, which is also known as Type 2 aplasia cutis congenita, is aplasia cutis congenita of the midline scalp seen together with congenital limb anomalies. Although various limb anomalies linked to aplasia cutis congenita have been described in the literature, we were not able to find any report of bilateral symbrachydactyly of the feet related to aplasia cutis congenita. Thus, this case seems to represent an unreported form of the AdamsOliver syndrome. Etiology, associated anomalies, treatment and complications of Adams-Oliver syndrome are reviewed.

Various laser treatment modalities for angiokeratomas have been reported in the literature. A 60-year-old male patient presented for the treatment of multiple angiokeratomas of the scrotum and a 56-year-old female patient presented for the treatment of vulvar angiokeratomas. A 1064 nm long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser was used to treat the patients' lesions. The patients received two laser treatment sessions at an interval of 2 months. Nd:YAG laser treatment yielded successful results in the treatment of our patients' scrotal and vulvar angiokeratomas following two application sessions. We suggest that a long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser is a safe and effective method for the treatment of angiokeratoma of Fordyce.

Superficial lymphatic malformations can develop in adults spontaneously without the presence of any predisposing condition. Because the majority of such late-onset malformations reported in the literature are localized lesions similar to the one in our patient, surgical removal with inclusion of subcutaneous tissue usually results in cure without recurrence.
