BackgroundIn recent years, with the prohibition of antibiotics used as growth stimulants in the nutrition of farm animals, researchers have searched for alternative natural and reliable products in order to be able to sustain the developments experienced during the use of antibiotics and to overcome the possible inconveniences. In this context, studies on evaluation of essential oils in poultry nutrition have been reported to improve the utilization of feed, stimulate the release of digestive enzymes, increase absorption in the stomach and intestines, antimicrobial and anti-parasitic effects and thus, can be an alternative to antibiotics and improve meat quality as well. Indeed, this study has been carried out to explore the effects of the addition of 150 mg/kg capsicum oleoresin (CAP), carvacrol (CAR), cinnamaldehyde (CIN) or their mixture (CAP+CAR+CIN) into the broilers’ ration over sensory, physical and chemical properties in breast meat and leg meat.MethodsExperiments were conducted over 400 male and female broiler chicks (Ross-308) in 5 groups (1 control group and 4 treatment groups), each composed of 80 chicks. The control group was fed without feed additives while the second, third, fourth and the fifth groups were fed with 150 mg CAP/kg feed, 150 mg CAR/kg feed, 150 mg CIN/kg feed, and 150 mg CAP+CAR+CIN/kg feed, respectively.ResultsAddition of CAP, CAR, CIN or CAP+CAR+CIN had effects on the sensory (of taste, tenderness, juiciness and overall acceptability); physical properties (of L* value and toughness), the chemical properties (of DM, CF, CP, linoleic, EPA, behenic, MUFA, PUFA and ∑n-6 of the leg meat), the physical characteristics (of toughness and firmness), and the chemical properties (of CF, CP, linoleic, ecosenic, EPA, lignoseric, MUFA and ∑n-3) of the breast meat in comparison to control group. Furthermore, while the treatments had positive impacts on thawing loss, cooking loss and water holding capacity in both breast and leg meat; no effect was observed on pH value and lipid oxidation on day 1, day 4 and day 8.ConclusionThe results strongly suggested that the addition of CAP, CAR, CIN or CAP+CAR+CIN to the rations of the broiler chicks changed the sensory, physical and chemical properties of breast and leg meat. It was also observed that these compounds were more effective when they were added to the ratio as a mixture rather than adding them individually.

This study investigated dietary supplementation of weaned lambs with Origanum vulgare essential oil and Capsicum oleoresin (chilli pepper) extract. Thirty-six eight-week-old male and female Menemen lambs were used in this study. Three dietary treatment groups consisted of T1, an unsupplemented control group; T2, a group supplemented with 300 mg/kg oregano essential oil, and T3, a group supplemented with 300 mg/kg Capsicum oleoresin. Feed and fresh water were available to the lambs ad libitum during the 56-day experiment. No significant effects of treatment were detected on growth rate, feed intake and feed conversion. In addition, serum urea, creatine, total protein, albumin, amylase, aspartate amino transferase (AST), alanine amino transferase (ALT), and gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels did not differ among treatments on day 56 of the study. When oregano oil and capsicum extract were added to the feed, total volatile fatty acids (TVFA), acetate (AA), propionate (PA), butyrate (BA), isobutyrate (IBA), valerate (VA), and AA to PA ratio in the rumen were decreased significantly in comparison with the control group at two hours after feeding, with the effect of T2 being greater than that of T3. Female lambs had lower levels of TVFA than male lambs. Thus, although neither additive affected fattening performance and serum constituents of the lambs, both altered the rumen fatty acid profile.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary capsicum oleoresin (CAP, 150 mg/kg), carvacrol (CAR, 150 mg/kg), cinnamaldehyde (CIN, 150 mg/kg) and equal amount of mixtures (CAP+CAR+CIN, 50 mg/kg each, capsicum oleoresin + carvacrol + cinnamaldehyde) supplements on growth performance, carcass characteristics, intestinal microflora, some blood parameters and IGF1 gene expression levels in broiler chickens. In the experiment, four hundred Ross-308 day-old, both sexs broiler chicks were randomly distributed to five dietary treatments, each with five replicates. Among these five dietary treatment groups formed for the experiment, the control group was fed without feed additives (control), the second group with 150 mg capsicum oleoresin for each kg of feed, the third group with 150 mg carvacrol for each kg of feed, the fourth group with 150 mg cinnamaldehyde for each kg of feed, and the last group with 150 mg mixtures for each kg of feed. The experiment was maintained to six weeks. According to the research results, the effects of dietary treatments on the body weight and the body weight gain were found to be significant (p<0.05). Especially in the group fed on diet added CAP+CAR+CIN, the treatments had a significant effect on feed intake and feed conversion ratio as well as body weight and body weight gain when compared to the control group on a periodic basis (p<0.05). In addition, the effect of the treatments on livability is insignificant (p>0.05). Among carcass properties, only carcass yield and some organ-related properties were significantly affected from addition of capsicum oleoresin, carvacrol, cinnamaldehyde and their mixtures (p<0.05). Cinnamaldehyde and mixture groups caused to significantly (p<0.05) reduce AST levels, carvacrol, cinnamaldehyde and capsicum oleoresin groups led to decrease level of triglycerides, carvacrol and mixture groups importantly (p<0.05) affected LDL levels were detected. And also, especially in the mixture groups, the number of ileum Lactobacillus spp. was found to be significantly higher (p<0.05) than the other groups. The changes in dietary content were not accompanied by changes in IGF-1 gene expression levels (p>0.05). In conclusion, the supplementation carvacrol, cinnamaldehyde, capsicum oleoresin and especially their mixtures at the level of 150 mg/kg to broiler diets affected positively growth performance, slaughter characteristics, some examined intestinal microflora and blood parameters in broiler chickens.
