Aim:To investigate prevalence and patterns of psychiatric disorders in young subjects with Internet addiction (IA).Methods: Subjects were taken from a sample of patients, aged 10-18 years old, referred to Istanbul Medical Faculty, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department due to a variety of behavioral and emotional problems alongside problematic Internet use. Inclusion criteria included IQ Ն70 and score Ն80 on Young's Internet Addiction Scale (YIAS). Psychiatric comorbidity was assessed using the Turkish version of the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version. Results: Subjects were 45 boys (75%) and 15 girls (25%) with an age range of 10-18 years old (mean age, 13.38 Ϯ 1.79 years). A total of 60% (n = 36) had been using Internet for Ն5 years. Mean hours/week spent on the Internet was 53.7 (range, 30-105 h) and the average YIAS score was 85. All subjects (100%) had at least one and 88.3% (n = 53) had at least two comorbid psychiatric disorders. The frequency of diagnostic groups were as follows: behavioral disorder, n = 52 (86.7%); anxiety disorder, n = 43 (71.7%); mood disorder, n = 23 (38.3%); elimination disorder, n = 16 (26.7%); tic disorder, n = 10 (16.7%); and substance use disorder, n = 4 (6.7%). The most common psychiatric disorders were attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (n = 53; 83.3%), social phobia (n = 21; 35.0%) and major depressive disorder (n = 18; 30.0%).
Conclusion:High rates of psychiatric comorbidity, particularly behavioral, anxiety and mood disorders were found in young subjects with IA. Because the presence of psychiatric disorders may affect the management /prognosis of IA, assessment should include that for other psychiatric disorders.
Although use of platelet gel (PG) for promoting tissue regeneration is a popular approach because of its capacity to accelerate tissue regeneration, to our knowledge, its effects on peripheral nerve have still not been elucidated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate effects of PG on sciatic nerve regeneration using electrophysiology, stereology, and electron microscopy. The study was performed using five groups of rats: sham operated (Sham), collagen tube conduit (CT), collagen tube conduit plus platelet gel (CT + PG), autogenous nerve graft (ANG), and primary repair (PR) groups. Gap length for CT and CT + PG groups is 1 cm. Electrophysiology showed that nerve conduction velocity was not different among experimental groups; the amplitude of compound action potential of PR group was significantly higher than other groups. Examination of the nerves showed that Sham group not only had a larger axon diameter but also a thicker myelin sheath. A higher number of myelinated axon was found in both ANG and PR groups in comparison to Sham, CT, and CT+PG groups. There is no significant difference between morphological quantities of CT+PG and CT group. It was expected that regeneration degree of the nerve fibers of CT+PG group would be better than CT group, which was the control group permitting to disclose the presence of a positive effect of PG on nerve regeneration, but this was not the case. Therefore, our results suggest that PG does not improve axon regeneration after microsurgical reconstruction of a nerve gap by collagen tubes.
In this work, we examine whether the "nexin" linkages of the flagellum can extend in length to accommodate interdoublet sliding. Flagellar bends of large angle were induced in bull spermatozoa by hypotonic treatment. It is argued that this produces large interdoublet displacements that are, nevertheless, still within physiological limits. Such flagella were examined by the rapid-freeze, deep-etch techique and the nexin linkages identified by their position in relation to the inner dynein arms and by their straplike, bipartite, morphology. They were found to bridge perpendicularly (or occasionally at an angle) between the A-and B-tubules of adjacent doublets. The nexin linkages were no more than -20 nm in length, even in regions in which -200 nm of sliding could be inferred. Variable registration between adjacent nexin rows gave some further support to the assumption that sliding had indeed taken place. From this, it is concluded that elastic deformation of the links, such as would accommodate interdoublet sliding, does not occur; some form of displacement must occur between nexin and the adjacent B-tubule. 0 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
The present study suggests that obese children and adolescents were found to have higher IA rates than their healthy peers, and the results indicate an association between IA and BMI.
Findings show that one can achieve the desired estimate precisely with a rather large and less time-consuming sampling approach. In addition, it was observed that the size discrepancy of nerve regeneration can be improved by collagen tube conduit even with a 1-cm gap.
ObjectiveTo explore the role of trauma and dissociation over self-injurious behaviors (SIB) and suicide attempts (SA) in adolescents.MethodsA total of 207 adolescents participated in the study. After conducting diagnostic interview, participants were divided into five groups as subjects with dissociative disorders (DD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety disorders (AD), and a control group (CG) without any psychiatric disorder. ADHD, MDD and AD groups were considered as non-dissociative disorders (non-DD group) in the present study.ResultsThere is no significant difference between groups in terms of number and age of the subjects (p>0.05). Among all participants SIB was reported in 32.2% of females (n=37) and 25% of males (n=23) while SA was reported in 29.6% of females (n=34) and 4.4% of males (n=4). Adolescents with DD were found to experience higher rates of SIB and SA than the other groups. Dissociation was the most important variable contributing to SIB and female gender was the most efficient variable for SA. Total trauma scores were also found to be significantly higher in DD group followed by non-DD and CG respectively.ConclusionSIB and SA are complex behavioral problems which may be associated with many psychiatric factors. However higher level dissociation seems as an important mediating factor, even regardless of psychiatric diagnosis, in the development of SIB and SA. More research is needed to further explore the factors effective over SIB and SA in adolescents.
