BackgroundOwing to the revolution in technology, the internet has become an important aspect of people’s lives. Modern technology is enabling people from diverse educational backgrounds to use the internet for several purposes, one of which is health information seeking. Recently, Web-based health information has become more popular among patients all over the world and among the general public.ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate the use of Web-based health resources among undergraduate students from different faculties at Kuwait University.MethodsThe study employed a cross-sectional design with students selected from 8 faculties of Kuwait University, 4 faculties of Literature and 4 faculties of Science. Data were collected using structured questionnaires, and analysis was done using a chi-square test and binary logistic regression to determine the factors associated with seeking health information on the Web.ResultsThe sample size obtained was 1132 with a response rate of 90.27% (1132/1254). Overall, the prevalence of students seeking Web-based health information was 92.66%. (1049/1132) The most significant factors associated with seeking health information on the Web were age, gender, faculty, year of study, primary source of internet, and level of experience with internet use. In total, 90.0% (325/361) of students who were aged older than 21 years used Web-based health information compared with 82.8% (275/332) of those who were aged 18 years. In addition, female students showed a higher prevalence (829/934, 88.8%) of Web-based health information seeking than males (210/270, 77.8%). Students who majored in faculties of Science were more likely to seek health information than those who majored in faculties of Literature. All the differences found in the study were statistically significant (P<.05).ConclusionsThe study concluded that many people use the internet for seeking health information. Sociodemographic factors have a significant association with Web-based health information seeking. Therefore, doctors must educate the public about the health information websites that can be trusted.
<abstract><sec> <title>Objectives</title> <p>Neuro-inflammation occurs as a sequence of brain injury and is associated with production of cytokines. Cytokines can modulate the function and survival of neurons, microglia and astrocytes. The objective of this study is to examine the effect of TNF on the neurons, microglia and astrocytes in normal brain and stab wound brain injury.</p> </sec><sec> <title>Methods</title> <p>Normal BALB/c male mice (N) without any injury were subdivided into NA and NB groups. Another set mouse was subjected to stab wound brain injury (I) and were subdivided into IA and IB. NA and IA groups received intraperitoneal injections of TNF (1 µg/kg body weight/day) for nine days, whereas NB and IB groups received intraperitoneal injections of PBS. Animals were killed on 1<sup>st</sup>, 2<sup>nd</sup>, 3<sup>rd</sup>, 7<sup>th</sup>, and 9<sup>th</sup> day. Frozen brain sections through the injury site in IA and IB or corresponding region in NA and NB groups were stained for neurodegeneration, immunostained for astrocytes, microglia and neurons. Western blotting for GFAP and ELISA for BDNF were done from the tissues collected from all groups.</p> </sec><sec> <title>Results</title> <p>The number of degenerating neurons significantly decreased in TNF treated groups. There was a significant increase in the number of astrocytes and microglia in TNF treated groups compared to PBS treated groups. In addition, it was found that TNF stimulated the expression of GFAP and BDNF in NA and IA groups.</p> </sec><sec> <title>Conclusions</title> <p>TNF induces astrogliosis and microgliosis in normal and injured brain and promotes the survival of cortical neurons in stab wound brain injury, may be by upregulating the BDNF level.</p> </sec></abstract>
Background Adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) is a highly underrepresented entity in medical literature, especially in the middle‐eastern region. Hypothesis This study is the first to assess the prevalence of adult congenital heart disease among the population of Kuwait. Methods After a retrospective register review of patients in Kuwait being followed up in the chest diseases hospital was conducted, patients who fit the inclusion criteria were enrolled in the study. Using the American College of Cardiology Task Force 1 of the 32nd Bethesda conference classification of the severity of ACHD, the patients were classified into those with simple, moderate, and complex congenital heart diseases. The age and gender of the patients, as well as the type repair performed, and the residual cardiac findings were recorded to assess the association between the complexity and residuals. Associations were assessed using STATA 15. Results A total of 611 patients were evaluated over a period of 18 months. The youngest participant was 20 years of age, and the oldest participant was 88 years old. Male participants with moderate congenital heart disease class were more common in our study population. Patients with complex congenital heart disease have more residual cardiac lesion than the moderate or simple groups. Almost (70%) of patients with complex cardiac anomalies have undergone either partial or complete repair. The most prevalent cardiac defect was atrial septal defect (21.5%). Tetralogy of Fallot was the most prevalent defect in the moderate group, representing (13%) of the group. The most prevalent anomaly in the complex group was double outlet right ventricle (DORV) representing (15.38%). Conclusion Adult Congenital heart disease is a growing entity of heart disease due to advanced repair techniques. This population requires registries to document cases and assign specialists for the management and care of this special group of patients. Highlights First database of adult congenital heart disease in Kuwait. The most prevalent heart defect was ASD in Kuwait. TOF was the most prevalent defect in the moderate group; and DORV was the most prevalent in the complex group. Patients with moderate ACHD tended to have a more complete repair than those in the complex group.
Background: Chronic migraine (CM) affects 5.4% of the Kuwaiti population. It is associated with significant headache-related disability, psychiatric comorbidity and reduced quality of life. The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy of Onabotulinumtoxin A on psychological aspects of chronic migraine patients.Methods: This prospective study over 36 months included chronic migraine patients in a tertiary headache center. Eligible patients met International Classification of Headache Disorders disorders-third edition, beta version (ICHD-III) revision criteria for chronic migraine. Patients with history of psychiatric or medical problems other than migraine disorders were excluded. Patients who received less than 4 injections cycles of Onabotulinumtoxin A were excluded. Identified patients received 155 units of Onabotulinumtoxin A quarterly according to the Phase III Research Evaluating Migraine Prophylaxis Therapy Trail (PREEMPT) protocol. Quality of life, the seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) scores, the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ9), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were collected before injection and at the end of the study. Mean comparison tests were performed using the independent sample t-test to assess the effects of Onabotulinumtoxin A on quality of life and comorbid symptoms of anxiety, depression, and quality of sleep.Results: The study identified 131 chronic migraine patients with a mean age of 44.92 years, mean disease duration of 12.20 years and a mean treatment sessions of 7.58. In their last visit, most of our sample showed improvement in quality of life (81%), GAD-7 (81%), PHQ9 (79%), and PSQ1 (76%). The mean score of patient satisfaction was 7.21. Onabotulinumtoxin A treatment for CM improved quality of life significantly (72.92 vs. 103.62; P < 0.0001). It was also associated with significant reduction in anxiety [GAD-7 (12.00 vs. 6.61; P < 0.0001)] and depression [PHQ-9 (17.91 vs. 12.52; P < 0.0001)] scores, as well as reduced difficulty in sleeping [PSQI (12.60 vs. 6.66; P < 0.0001)] at the last visit.Conclusion: Prophylactic Onabotulinumtoxin A treatment for CM was associated with significant improvement of quality of life, reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as improved symptoms of poor sleep.
Background:Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) monoclonal antibodies were approved as preventive treatment for migraine. We aimed to assess CGRP monoclonal antibodies efficacy and safety.Methods:Patients were diagnosed based on International Classification of Headache Disorders disorders-third edition, (ICHD-III). Eligible patients received CGRP monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and had a follow up visits for at least three months. Primary end point was a 50% or greater reduction in mean migraine days per month at the last visit. Secondary end points were change from baseline to last visit in the mean number of migraine days per month, change in the number of days of use of analgesics, change in the severity of headache pain, and change in scores on the Quality of life (QOL) questionnaire. Safety and tolerability were reported.Results:This prospective study included 63 migraine patients, with a mean age of 44.59 years. Females represented 77.8% of the cohort. A 50% or greater reduction in the mean number of migraine days per month was achieved in 68.3% of patients. At the last visit, patients had a significant reduction in migraine days, number of days of analgesic-usage and the severity of headache (5.13+ 4.11versus 14.04 + 7.77; p < 0.01), (6.43+ 6.34 versus 15.85 +7.31; p <. 0001), (5.40 +2.48 versus 9.67+ 0.72; p < 0.001) respectively. CGRP mAb treatment significantly improved quality of life (112.20+ 12.20 versus 92.13 +15.84; P< 0.001). 14.4% reported adverse events.Conclusion:Prophylactic CGRP monoclonal antibodies treatment for migraine were efficacious and reduced the number of monthly migraine days and the use of days of analgesics.
