RESUMO Na Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Doce, no Sudeste brasileiro, município de Mariana (MG), o rompimento da barragem de Fundão, em 5 de novembro de 2015, desencadeou o desastre da Samarco/Vale/BHP. O desastre não foi uma ocorrência natural, pois resultou da adoção de tecnologias e decisões técnico-administrativas, cujas responsabilidades criminais foram apontadas pelo Ministério Público. Os impactos foram diretos e indiretos sobre rios e terrenos aluviais; sobre as áreas de proteção ambiental, reservas florestais, flora e fauna; sobre os habitats, hábitos e os coabitantes rurais e urbanos; e sobre a zona costeira no estado do Espírito Santo. O artigo busca identificar a problemática que emerge do desastre, discutir as consequências do sentimento de incerteza e analisar a pertinência do desastre como objeto de investigação, sem desconsiderar o papel da mídia na sua construção como evento.
No dia 5 de novembro de 2015, o Brasil e o mundo tomaram conhecimento do desastre ambiental provocado pelo rompimento da barragem de Fundão (Samarco/Vale/BHP Billiton), em Mariana-MG. O impacto do desastre não se restringiu às áreas imediatas à jusante do barramento, onde causou destruição de assentamentos humanos, mas impactou cursos d’água, terras agricultáveis, atividades econômicas, abastecimento de água potável para cidades e a biodiversidade. O Parque Estadual do Rio Doce (PERD), principal remanescente da Mata Atlântica do estado, se viu diante de uma ameaça não prevista em seu plano de manejo. Assim, este artigo é dedicado à história e importância do PERD, ao desastre da Samarco/Vale/BHP e aos impactos provocados nesta unidade de conservação. Discute-se impactos do desastre para a vida humana e biodiversidade, inclusive porque as condições ecológicas implicam em possibilidades e entraves para processos sociais.
O Vale do Rio Doce - VRD tem motivado investigações nas mais diversas áreas do conhecimento, por parte de pesquisadores nacionais e estrangeiros. O interesse é atraído pelas variadas imbricações de processos socioambientais, socioeconômicos, socioculturais e políticos. O VRD se manteve como fronteira aberta, até meados do século XX, quando, finalmente, acabou a disponibilidade de terras e se encerou a frente pioneira. Concomitante ao povoamento, ocupação econômica e formação dos núcleos urbanos, se implantou pela ação do Estado grandes projetos de investimento, particularmente nas áreas de siderurgia e mineração. Se para atores vinculados à modernização a fronteira era vista como depositária de recursos naturais, para as pessoas que chegavam com esperanças diversas a fronteira era uma terra prometida...Palavras chave: Minas Gerais; Vale do Rio Doce; Frente Pioneira; Frente de Expansão Demográfica; Grandes Investimentos de Capital.
O território da mineração no Brasil ganhou destaque com o desastre de 5 de novembro de 2015, desencadeado pelo rompimento da barragem da Samarco Mineração, na bacia do Rio Doce. Os eventos fizeram emergir a existência do complexo minero-metalúrgico e os riscos, principalmente para populações mais frágeis (comunidades rurais negras e mestiças, indígenas, ribeirinhos pobres, agricultores e pescadores). O artigo examina a questão pelo conceito de envirotechnical de Sara Pritchard, historiadora ambiental. A definição de espaço geográfico proposta por Milton Santos foi ampliada pela introdução dos conceitos de biocultura, território e multiterritorialidade. A combinação dos conceitos possibilitou considerar as heterogeneidades socioespaciais e ecossistêmicas, de modo a fazer emergir o cerne do fenômeno criado pela presença do complexo minerador: as contradições como relacionalidades marcadas pelo poder.
