Das vorliegende Buch erschien erstmals 1985 in der Wissenschaftlichen Buchgemeinschaft in Darmstadt und wird nun in einer zweiten Auflage vorgelegt. Die Publikation sieht sich als zusammenfassende Uberschau der musikalischen Volkskunde, in welche jedoch neben primar tradierten AuBerungen wie Volkslied, -musik, -instrumente und Volkstanz auch Erscheinungen der Unterhaltungs-und Salonmusik, des Folklorismus, der Liedermacher, bis hin zu Pop-und Rockmusik aufgenommen wurden. Nach einer kurzen Definition des Stoffgebietes widmet Hartmut Braun das erste Hauptkapitel ()Sammlung und Forschung?) dem Begriff >Volkslied<, seinen verschiedenen Sammlungen, stellt die unterschiedlichen Theorien vor, geht in einem eigenen Unterabschnitt auf die Existenz des Volksliedes vor Herder ein und wendet sich schlieBlich den internationalen Beruhrungspunkten zu. Das zweite Kapitel (?Volksmusik im engeren Sinne<) behandelt die instrumentale Volksmusik sowohl als eigenstandige Form als auch in ihrer Beziehung zu Lied und Tanz. ?Volkstanz< heiBt das dritte Kapitel, in dem einerseits Gruppen-und andererseits Paartanze besprochen werden. Das vierte Kapitel (>Volksmusikinstrumente<) stellt verschiedene europaische Instrumente auf Basis der Hornbostel-Sachs'schen Systematik vor, und das funfte Kapitel (>Sekundare Einflusse<) beschaftigt sich mit Kontrafakturen und Flugblattdrucken, dem Kunstlied im Volksmund, der Unterhaltungsmusik, dem Schlager, den Gesellschaftstanzen aus Ubersee und der Popmusik. Ganz im Zeichen der ?)Volksmusikpflege? steht das sechste Kapitel, gegliedert in Abschnitte uber die Pflege durch Schule und Organisationen wie Vereine oder studentische Vereinigungen und schlieBlich in einen eigenen Abschnitt, den Braun ?)Neuere Pflege der Volksmusik mit kommerzieller Ausrichtungo nennt und in dem er speziell auf Tourismus und Folklorismus eingeht. Das letzte, siebente Kapitel untersucht >)Ideologische Erneuerungsbestrebun-gen<, v.a. jene der Jugendmusikbewegung und der Liedermacher. Eine umfangreiche Bibliografie sowie Sach-, Titel-, Quellen-und Personenregister beschlieBen das 181 Seiten starke Buchlein.
