Experiences of the checking and evaluation of the resistance of maize (Zea mays L.) to maize dwarf mosaic potyvirus (MDMV) and sugarcane mosaic potyvirus (SCMV) are described on the basis of experimental results. Checking of the resistance of 53 different maize lines was carried out with 25 plants per line and virus which have been doubly inoculated mechanically with defined isolates of both viruses. The evaluation of the resistance was accomplished by calculation of the rate of attack (BG), intensity of symptom expression (BN), attack index (BI) and degree of resistance (RG). The inoculation method was proved reliable because of the high infection rates of susceptible lines. The reactions of the different genotypes revealed that the breeding material investigated involved absolute or qualitative as well as relative or quantitative virus resistance. The former type of resistance included plants which remained symptomless and virusfree despite of repeated inoculations. The second type of resistance concerned plants or lines with a longer incubation period, lower rates of infestation, no or mild symtoms, lower virus concentration and/or not fully systemic virus spread within the plant. The comparison of the two scales of evaluation, a...
