183meine Entwicklung seit der Renaissance, sie sei wissenschaftlicher oder praktischer Natur, im Zeichen dieser Trennung, also des analytischen Denkens und der damit gegebenen wachsenden Vereinzelung. Ohne Zweifel charakterisiert es andererseits die Literatur, daß sie die "Gesinnung zur Totalität" bewahrt, die Vereinzelung problematisiert, das Leiden daran zeigt oder ihre Überwindung fordert. Nur so lassen sich barocker Vanitas-Begriff, das idealistische Bemühen um Synthese und die Klage der modernen Literatur, von der Scheible überzeugend spricht, verstehen. Aus diesem Grunde scheint dem Rezensenten Scheibles zentrale These, daß "bürgerliche Kunst ihre Substanz in der Rettung des durch das Allgemeine unterdrückten Besonderen hat" (S. 476), insofern ein Mißverständnis, als nicht das Besondere, das als solches stets abstrakt ist, seit dem Nominalismus in Bedrängnis gerät, sondern die "wahrhafte Einzelheit", in der Allgemeines und Besonderes verbunden erscheinen. Nicht die Literatur, sondern die generelle Entwicklung zielt auf das Besondere und Abstrakte, so daß Adornos These, es falle dem künstlerischen Genie zu, "die Entwicklung der außerästhetischen Produktivkräfte im Werk nachzuvollziehen" (S. 480), das kritische Potential der Kunst vernachlässigt. Anderenfalls hätte Newton zum Vorbild Goethes werden müssen.Auf Passagen, die aus den erwähnten Gründen Widerspruch provozieren, folgen Seiten und Kapitel, die lebhafte Zustimmung erfordern. In der Darstellung W. v. Humboldts, Schillings und besonders Simmels und Lukäcs' gelingen ebenso klare wie kritische Porträts. Philosophische Entwicklung und ästhetischer Standpunkt der Genannten werden aus dem historischen Kontext deutlich gemacht und sicher gewertet. Sieht man von dem allzu universalen und gern gebrauchten Attribut "bürgerlich" ab, so ist die Sprache Scheibles klar, konzis und wohltuend frei vom Ballast preziöser Begriffe. Die fruchtbare und widersprüchliche Unruhe im Argument macht das Buch zu einer spannungsvollen Einheit von informativer Ästhetikgeschichte und auf Disput zielender These im ursprünglichen Sinne des Wortes.
