Zusammenfassung: Die Art und das Ausmaß, in denen dem Menschen die Befindlichkeit respektive die Empfindungen eines Pferdes prinzipiell und damit auch faktisch verschlossen bleiben, sollen hier erörtert werden. Mit dieser Darstellung soll die Problematik der Berufung auf die Befindlichkeit zur Begründung praktischer Maßnahmen im Umgang mit dem Pferd deutlich gemacht, die verbreitete Praxis der Deklarierung von Eindrücken, Annahmen und Projektionen als Erkenntnisse expliziert werden. Darüber hinaus wird die Gefahr erläutert, im Bemühen um die Erkenntnis der Befindlichkeit des Pferdes die Relevanz von dessen somatischer Gesundheit und dessen eufunktionalem Verhalten zu relativieren. Den über mehr oder minder wahrscheinlich zutreffende Feststellungen nicht hinausgelangenden Aussagen über die Befindlichkeit werden die zumindest weitgehende Validität und Reliabilität der Ermittlung des Status der Gesundheit und des Verhaltens gegenübergestellt: Zu gesicherten Erkenntnissen über das Empfinden des Equiden ist nicht zu gelangen, auf die Befindlichkeit rekurrierende verbindliche Begründungen für die verschiedenen praktischen Maßnahmen des Umgangs mit dem Pferd sind nicht zu leisten. Die ungesicherten Annahmen über die Existenz und die Wirkung der Befindlichkeiten lassen sich allerdings auch nicht falsifizieren. Dementsprechend ist das der Maxime "in dubio pro equo" folgende Vorgehen der moralisch Engagierten als ein ethisch legitimes Verfahren zu respektieren: Die moralisch Engagierten lassen sich-auf der Basis ihres mehr oder minder intensiven Wissens um die Analogien in der neuronalen Ausstattung von Mensch und Tier-vom (dem menschlichen strukturell ähnlichen) Verhalten des Pferdes beeindrucken. Sie gewinnen ihren Eindrücken entsprechende Überzeugungen zu den Befindlichkeiten des Pferdes und handeln aufgrund ihrer ethischen Einstellungen sowie aufgrund der von ihnen beachteten moralischen Appelle, nicht aufgrund abgesicherter Erkenntnisse.
