A one‐dimensional diffusion model of the exchange of air between the two hemispheres is used to determine whether the concentration measurements now available can yield any information on the lifetime of fluorocarbons (FC's) in the earth's atmosphere. Comparison with the empirical data shows that the lifetime cannot be determined because of the uncertainty in the measurements and the FC emission data. The existence of a large sink is reconcilable with the empirical data.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
