A presença da música vocal na produção do compositor brasileiro Camargo Guarnieri (1907-1993) é extremamente marcante. Suas canções foram produzidas ao longo de setenta anos de atividades ininterruptas, escritas a partir de 1923 e em parceria com poetas consagrados. O presente trabalho tece algumas considerações sobre a construção de novos caminhos compositivos a partir dessa prática musical de Guarnieri, que sempre escolheu textos em idioma português, afro-brasileiro e ameríndio. Faz alusão a Mário de Andrade (1893-1945) e sua presença em todo o desenrolar do Movimento Modernista, atuando como verdadeiro mentor intelectual de uma geração que vivia na efervescente São Paulo metropolitana. Procura refletir sobre os principais materiais utilizados por Guarnieri, suas reincidências e desistências, evidenciando inclusive aspectos ligados à prosódia, como as aplicações das métricas musicais que transcrevem as métricas poéticas. Há que se considerar os poemas, ensaios e demais gêneros literários que circulavam no entorno dos anos 1920 e que aparecem em significativas obras vocais guarnierianas. Sob esta ótica, discute-se o mosaico de ideias em que se ancorou o compositor em foco e a valorização dessa pluralidade num ambiente sintonizado com o novo milênio.
