The polymerization of acrylamide initiated by an ascorbic acid–peroxydisulfate redox system was studied in aqueous solution at 35 ± 0.2°C in the presence of air. The concentrations studied were [monomer] = (2.0–15.0) × 10−2 mole/liter; [peroxydisulfate] = (1.5–10.0) × 10−3 mole/liter; and [ascorbic acid] = (2.84–28.4) × 10−4 mole/liter; temperatures were between 25–50°C. Within these ranges the initial rate showed a half‐order dependence on peroxydisulfate, a first‐order dependence on an initial monomer concentration, and a first‐order dependence on a low concentration of ascorbic acid [(2.84–8.54) × 10−4 mole/liter]. At higher concentrations of ascorbic acid the rate remained constant in the concentration range (8.54–22.72) × 10−4 mole/liter, then varied as an inverse halfpower at still higher concentrations of ascorbic acid [(22.72–28.4) × 10−4 mole/liter]. The initial rate increased with an increase in polymerization temperature. The overall energy of activation was 12.203 kcal/mole in a temperature range of 25–50°C. Water‐miscible organic solvents depressed the initial rate and the limiting conversion. The viscometric average molecular weight increased with an increase in temperature and initial monomer concentration but decreased with increasing concentration of peroxydisulfate and an additive, dimethyl formamide (DMF).
The polymerization of acrylamide initiated by permanganate/oxalic acid redox pair has been studied in aqueous media a t 35 & 0.2OC in nitrogen atmosphere. The rate of polymerization is independent of activator (oxalic acid) concentration (0.75.1Op3 to 7.5.10-3 mole/l.) except at very high (above 7.5.10-3 mole/l.) or very low (below O.75.lOW3 mole/l.) concentrations of the activator. The rate varies linearly a t low monomer Concentration. The catalyst exponent decreases from nearly unity to 0.65 with the increase in the concentration of catalyst (KMn04) probably due to participation of primary radicals in the termination of the growing chain. The initial rate increases with increase in the polymerization temperature. The overall energy of activation has been found to be 11.97 Kcal/mole within the temperature range 25-50 O C .Organic solvents (water miscible only) and salts (KCl, Na2S04) depress the initial rate but small amounts of manganous salts (MnS04) can increase the initial rate t o a considerable extent. High concentration of salts (Na2S04, KC1, and MnS04) causes termination of the growing chain. A complexing agent, NaF, decreases the initial rate but the limiting conversion is increased.Introduction of new catalyst a t intermediate stages of polymeiization increases both the rate and the limiting conversion.
Polymerization of acrylic acid in aqueous solution initiated by permanganate-oxalic acid redox pair has been studied a t 32 + 0.2 "C in nitrogen atmosphere. The rate of polymerization has been found to be nearly independent of oxalic acid concentration within the range 1.87 to 9.33 .lO-3 mole/l. and decreases only a t higher concentrations of the oxalic acid. The rate has also been found to vary with the h s t power of the monomer concentration (within the range 1.44 to 5.76.10W2 mole/l.) and the f i s t power of the catalyst concentration (8.0 to 28.0.10-5mole/l.). It is, however, proportional to half power a t relatively high catalyst concentration, at fixed concentrations of oxalic acid (1.03.10-2 mole/l.) and the monomer (5.76.10-2 mole/l.). At higher concentration of monomer the catalyst exponent has been found to be nearly unity for both the higher and lower concentrations of the catalyst. The initial rate of polymerization increases with increase in temperature. The overall energy of activation has been found to be 19.56 kcal/mole within the temperature range 30-45OC. Organic solvents and salts (KC1, Na2S04, and Na2C204) depress the rate but MnS04.4H20 has been found to increase the initial rate but depress the maximum conversion.
