Background and Purpose— Circulating metals synchronously reflect multiple metal exposures from both natural and anthropogenic sources, which may be linked with the risk of stroke. However, there is a lack of prospective studies investigating the associations of multiple metal exposures with incident stroke. Methods— We performed a nested case-control study within the ongoing Dongfeng-Tongji cohort launched in 2008. A total of 1304 incident stroke cases (1035 ischemic strokes and 269 hemorrhagic strokes) were prospectively identified by December 31, 2016, and matched to incident identity sampled controls according to age (within 1 year), sex, and blood sampling date (within 1 month). We determined the concentrations of 24 plasma metals and assessed the associations of plasma multiple metal concentrations with incident stroke using conditional logistic regression and elastic net model. Results— The average follow-up was 6.1 years. After adjusting for established risk confounders, copper, molybdenum, and titanium were significantly associated with higher risk of ischemic stroke (odds ratios according to per interquartile range increase, 1.29 [95% CI, 1.13–1.46], 1.19 [95% CI, 1.05–1.35], and 1.30 [95% CI, 1.07–1.59]), whereas rubidium and selenium were associated with lower risk of hemorrhagic stroke (odds ratios according to per interquartile range increase, 0.66 [95% CI, 0.50–0.87] and 0.68 [95% CI, 0.51–0.91]). The predictive plasma metal scores based on multiple metal exposures were significantly associated with higher risk of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke (adjusted odds ratios according to per interquartile range increase, 1.37 [95% CI, 1.20–1.56] and 1.53 [95% CI, 1.16–2.01]). Conclusions— Plasma copper, molybdenum, and titanium were associated with higher risk of ischemic stroke, whereas plasma rubidium and selenium were associated with lower risk of hemorrhagic stroke. These findings may have important public health implications given the ever-increasing burden of stroke worldwide.

For the stretchable electrode, strong interface adhesion is the primary guarantee for long service life, and the maximization of the tensile limit with remarkable electrical stability can expand the scope of its use. Here, a cost-effective strategy is proposed to fabricate a high-adhesion stretchable electrode. By modifying dopamine and functionalized silane on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate in sequence before the electroless deposition process, super-high adhesion up to 3.1 MPa is achieved between the PDMS substrate and silver layer, and the electrode exhibits extraordinary conductivity of 4.0 × 10 7 S/m. This process is also suitable for other common flexible substrates and metals. Moreover, inspired by the micro-/nanostructure on the surface of lotus leaf, a biomimetic elastomeric micropore film with a uniformly distributed micropore is fabricated by the one-step soft lithography replication process. The electrode exhibits a large tensile limit exceeding 70% uniaxial tensile and superior electrical stability from 6.3 to 11.5 Ω under 20% uniaxial tensile for more than 10 000 cycles. This study seeks a promising method to manufacture stretchable electrodes with high adhesion, large tensile limit, and excellent electrical stability, showing great potential to detect various biological signals including joint movement, surface electromyography, and so forth.

The fluid-solid interaction (FSI) dynamic responses for a Light Weight Pyramidal Sandwich Plate Structure (LWPSPS) under different water-entry velocities (1m/s-6m/s) are investigated numerically and theoretically. The characteristics of impact pressure and structure deformation are obtained by using LS-DYNA code based on the proposed 3D multi-physics (air-water-solid) FEM model. Numerical results show that the average water impact pressure of LWPSPS is much lower than that of the monolithic plate with same mass. Moreover, a phenomenon called “local air cushion” is observed for LWPSPS which does not exist for a monolithic plate. Theoretical hydroelasticity analysis demonstrates that the FSI effect of LWPSPS is weak when the ratio of water impact duration time to wet natural vibration period is greater than 4. In the study, an engineering estimation method to predict the maximum deformation of the LWPSPS is proposed, in which the total deformation is divided into two parts, i.e. local field deformation and global field deformation, and they are both computed using analytical model. Good agreement between the numerical results and ones obtained from the proposed engineering estimation method is achieved. Furthermore, the geometric variation sensitiveness analysis is also conducted.

Returns policies can prevent a manufacturer's product from being discounted. Such discounting discourages inventory holdings, and can deny adequate retail representation to products with uncertain demand. We demonstrate that returns are not simply a substitute for resale price maintenance, but can instead be employed to support a desirable degree of price dispersion at retail. Surprisingly, optimal return policies depend only on market demand functions and marginal production costs. The manufacturer need not know the distribution of demand uncertainty for its product, but can instead rely on retailers to order appropriately. Our results generalize to oligopoly settings.
