In der vorliegenden Arbeit unternehmen wir den Versueh, eine Theorie der Konvergenz unabh~ngig yon der mengentheoretisehen Topologie aufzubauen. Es ist bekannt, dab sehon vor l£ngerer Zeit ~hnliehe Versuehe unternommen wurden (s. z. B. die ~C~*-Strukturen bei KVRATOWSKY, Topologie I). Es seheint aber -und wird dureh Beispiele sogar aus der Topologie klardal~ es kaum ge]ingen kann, eine befriedigende Konvergenztheorie unter Verwendung der (abz/~hlbaren) Folgen allein zu erhalten: die Beschr/~nkung auf abz/~hlbare Systeme von Elementen ist bei Untersuchungen yon dieser Atlgemeinheit nieht verst/~ndlieh. Man kSnnte sieh jedoeh der Moore-Smithschen Folgen bedienen, bei denen diese BeschrKnkung wegf/~llt. Es sehien uns abet vorteilhafter, die Filtertheorie heranzuziehen, die sich ja in der mengentheoretisehen Topologie als ein sehr niitzliehes Hilfsmittel erwiesen hat. Die Theorie der Relationen und Operationen ffir Filter ist yon sehr elementarem Charakter und bereitet keinerlei Schwierigkeiten, so dal~ der ,,technische" Aufwand denkbar gering wird. Wir erkl/~ren also in geeigneter Weise einen Konvergenzbegriff fiir Filter, indem wit jedem Element einer Menge E eine gewisse Menge yon Filtern zuordnen, die zwei Forderungen rein algebraiseher Natur zu genfigen hat; die Filter der so dem Element x zugeordneten Menge heiBen dann konvergent gegen x. Dutch die Angabe der in diesem Sinne konvergierenden Filter wird auf E eine ,,Limitierung" definiert und E heil~t dann ein Limesraum; es stellt sich dabei heraus, dab die Topologien spezielle Limitierungen sind. Viele Begriffe und S/~tze der Topologie lassen sich ohne weiteres auf die Limitierungen fibertragen, insbesondere in evidenter Weise der Begriff der stetigen Abbildung. Diese Abbildungen ergeben wie im Fatle topologiseher R/~ume, wo wit den iibhehen Stetigkeitsbegriff zuriick erhal~en, eine Klasse yon Morphismen der Limesr/~ume, so dab man damit eine Kategorie erh~lt. Diese Kategorie ist additiv, wenn man sieh auf abelsehe Gruppen und zul/~ssige Limitierungen besehr/~nkt (s. § 3 flit diesen Begriff); sic ist eine abelsche Kategorie (mit direkten Produkten), wenn man als Morphismen nur die Homomorphismen ira engeren Sinne zul/~Bt, die wie im Falle topologischer Gruppen ausgezeiehnet werden.Zur Terminotogie ist zu bemerken, da$ es uns unnStig sehien, yon ,,Pseudokonvergenz" und ,,Pseudostetigkeit" zu spreehen, wie dies etwa gesehieht (s. z. B.[6]), um nieht die Ausdrueksweise unnStig zu komplizieren.Math. Ann. 187 20
