Sehr reines Chrom kann durch Elektrolyse wäßriger Chrom(VI)‐oxyd‐Lösungen erhalten werden. Versuche über den Einfluß von verschiedenen Fremd‐Ionen auf Ausbeute und Reinheit des Metalls und über weiter Arbeitsbedingungen — vor allem die Werkstoff‐Frage — für eine Dauerelektrolyse im kg‐Maßstab werden beschrieben. In Dauerelektrolysen über mehrere tausend Stunden konnten Chrom‐Platten mit 250 bis 500 ppm Sauerstoff, 10 ppm Stickstoff, 10 ppm Schwefel und weiteren metallischen Verunreinigungen, deren Gesamtmenge 10 ppm nicht überschreitet, hergestellt werden. Das Chrom enthält etwa 40 bis 60 ml Wasserstoff pro 100 g Metall und weist eine Vickershärte HV10 von 500 bis 600 kg/mm2 auf. Durch eine Vakuumbehandlung kann der Wasserstoff‐Gehalt auf 1 bis 3 ml/100 g Metall erniedrigt werden. Dabei vermindert sich die Vickershärte HV10 auf 150 kg/mm2. Aus Dendriten und zerkleinertem Metall lassen sich Preßkörper herstellen.
