Aus Bodenproben, die Prof. H. GAMS anlg.Blieh einer Besteigung des bit. Kenya im September 1963 unter Lobelia telekii in einer HShe yon 3800 m gesammelt hatte, konntea neben Chloroeoecalen und Leptosireen auch zwei neue Arten yon Heterokonten, Pleurochloris polyphem und Heterococcus clavatus, isoliert werden. Es wurden Reinkulturen hergestellt und diese auf 1 ~ Knop-Agar bei Dauerlicht (2000--2500 Lux) weitergezfiehtet.
Pleurochloris polyphem nov. spec.Pleurochloris ist eine polymorphe Gat~ung der Pleurochlorideen und ,,gehSrt zu einem Sehwarm untereinander sehr ~hnlicher, systematiseh aber weit voneinander abstehender, einzeln lebender oder unregelm~l~ige Lager bildender, grtiner, kugeliger Algen, die oft nur sehr sehwer yon-9 einander untersehieden werden kSnnen" (PAscH]~, 1939).Die neue Art steht zweifellos Pleurochloris magna nahe und zeigt viele Merkmale dieser Art, wie sie aueh BOYE-PETERSE~ (1932) angibt. Sie besitzt wie diese nut einen, meist tier zweigeteilten, in ~lteren Zellen o~t mehrfach gelappten, wandst~ndigen, gelbgrfinen Chromatophoren (Abb. 1 a--h) und eine Vakuole, die sich mit dem Zellwaehstum vergr58ert. Diese enth~lt aul]er stark lichtbrechenden KSrperchen aueh Karotinoid-kSrnchen in lebhafter BRow~scher Molekularbewegung. In gut wachsenden Kulturen f~llt im Chromatophor hg.ufig ein kristallartiger KSrper auf, tier eine positive Xanthoproteinreaktion gibt (Abb. 1 b, e, g).
