In dem von August Leskien übersetzten Balkanmärchen 1 ) nr. 50: 'Die geschichte von den drei brüdern, den drei Schwestern und dem Halbeisernen mann 7 häufen sich auf engem räume die motive, die an deutsche mythologie und sage anklingen. 8. 273 finden wir das aus der eddischen Hymiskviila bekannte motiv des kesselhebens: wie Thorr den riesen, so imponiert hier der jüngste von den drei brüdern den räubern, indem er den ungeheuer schweren kessel lüpft. S. 274 finden wir den Halbeisernen mann, zu dessen geschichte das Grimmsche märchen 136 'Vom Eisenhans' eine umstilisierte Variante und zugleich die Vorgeschichte bietet: der unhold befindet sich im Balkanmärchen bereits in der gefangenschaft des königs; wie er hineingeriet, erzählt das deutsche märchen. Durch den jungen söhn hier, den jungen Schwiegersohn dort gewinnt er die freiheit. S. 275 und s. 276 finden wir, gleich doppelt angewendet, das menschenfressermotiv: der (riesische) dämon kommt heim und riecht menschenfleisch; seine hausfrau schützt den fremdling in dem einen falle, in dem ändern mißlingt dies. Es ist bekannt, wie dies motiv bei uns, außer im märchen vom Däumling, gleichfalls in der Hymiskvida anklingt. 2 ) -Ob es sich nun in all diesen fällen um literarische entlehnungen oder um Urzeugung handelt, ist hier ohne belang. Ich für meinen teil glaube an das letztere, denn die Vorstellungen von leben und tod, leib und seele, ferner die kindlichen wünsche, ängste, träume und Phantasien sind bei sämtlichen primitiven der erde die gleichen, und märchen, mythen und sagen wurzeln in ihnen.S. 277 begegnet nun aber auch der große eber, der, glaube J ) Balkanmärcheii aus Albanien, Bulgarien, Serbien und Kroatien, Jena 1919, s. 272 -278.2 ) Vgl. v. d.
