Hi, my name is Hans-Joerg Keim and I lit the candle light shots in Tangled for the song "Mother knows best". The idea for the sequence was to use a black background and whenever there was a visible light source in frame it was a candle light. To make it look natural and moody I used Point lights which are harder to control and produce six times more shadow maps than spotlights. For example, one shot had one candle and another had three candles. Reel lock came closer and there was only one shot left (First Layout clip) and it only had two candle lights in it. So it should be no problem to finish this shot on time, but when I got the final layout the second part looked slightly different. Instead of two candles it had 24 candles and by using point lights I ended up with 144 shadow maps per frame for the stair case alone. Here is my first comp of the shot. I couldn't even render the stair case in one part because I reached the maximum for cached shadow maps. I already passed the deadline for 1k approval and there was only one week left for the reel lock. So I rendered all the passes in 2k but I still needed the flames from the effects department. I got the effect Wednesday afternoon and I could show my shot at evening rounds. And then the question came up how do we turn off the lights? I didn't even know that the lights were turned off at the end. Because we were running out of time the vfx supervisor said I should try to fade it to black over a few frames. My idea was to use Mother Gothel's performance when she spins her coat at the end to magically turn off the lights. But how could I achieve this on time and coordinate this with the effects department? My solution was to render every light as a separate renderpass, animate everything in the comp and fade the effects with a rotoshape. So I ended up with 69 animation curves. And here is the final comp. Everybody liked it and it got approved Thursday night. Next day I passed the 2k check and handed it off to stereo. It got approved and was shipped Friday night for Saturday reel lock.
