Die Vorlagen stammen grogteils aus der Sammlung des Herausgebers. Incipitund Namenregister sowie (in Bd. 1) ein von Jan Bauwens erstelltes verdienstvolles biographisches Repertorium der Liedsinger und Drucker erleichtern den Zugang zu den mitgeteilten Texten. Melodiebeispiele enthilt nur der 2. Band: insgesamt sind es nur drei. Wie die Tonangaben erkennen lassen, waren die Lieder teils nach hollandischen, vielfach aber auch franzbsischen Weisen zu singen. Deutscher Einfluf3 spielt bei den Melodien iiberhaupt keine Rolle. Der Verf. hat beide Bande jeweils mit einer kurzen Einfiihrung versehen, worin er iiber Entstehungsbedingungen, Verbreitung und Auffiihrung der Lieder Auskunft gibt. Besonders aufschluf3reich ist dabei die von De Vuyst zitierte Anzeige des Lieddruckers De Windt von Stekene, der um die Jahrhundertwende seine Kundendie Liedsiingeraufforderte, ihm Zeitungsberichte mit grausigen Mordtaten einzuliefern, um sie postwendend in Lieder umwandeln zu kbnnen: ,... zendt ons de gazet waarin het eerste verschynt en seffens springt den drukker, de alomgekende waardichter op zijn dichtmachine en des anderendags zendt hij u, naar uw statie tegen remboursement, zoveele schoone volksliederen of als gij begeert, aan 6 fr. de 1000 boven 't port" (I, S. 14). Ein besserer Beweis fiir den Warencharakter der hollindisch-flimischen Zeitungslieder ist kaum denkbar! Leider kommt der analytische Aspekt in dieser Ausgabe zu kurz. Das Vorwort z. B. hilt wissenschaftlichen Anspriichen nicht stand und ergeht sich in General isierungen, fiir die der Verf. iiberdies noch den Beweis schuldig bleibt. Wie will er beispielsweise nachweisen, die Zuhairer hfitten beim Vortrag der Lieder durch den Marktsinger ,,natiirlich" mitgesungen? Die Tatsache, daf3 diese Lieder nach bekannten Weisen gedichtet waren, ist dafiir noch nicht ausreichend. Wenn sich diese Ausgabe schon an ein breites Publikum wendet, so wire es naheliegend gewesen, die Leser auch mit der spezifischen Auffiihrungssituation vertraut zu machen und durch einige Abbildungen den Unterschied zwischen marktzanger (ohne Requisiten) und rolzanger (mit Bildtafeln) herauszuarbeiten. Die dem 2. Band beigegebene Bibliographie ist mit 6 Titeln etwas spirlich ausgefallen. Auch in den Fuf3noten ist kaum irgend etwas aus der reichen Spezialliteratur zumThema aufgearbeitet (z.
