Knowledge is shifting to a more central position in our society. The traditional economy, based on capital, raw materials and labor, is changing in a system where knowledge has more value: the knowledge economy. It is 'an economy where the acquisition of knowledge offers more value than the traditional production factors such as capital, raw materials and labor' (Kessels and Keursten, 2001). This shift, caused by increasing globalization in constant innovation of products and services, has significant consequences for our society and the meaning of learning within this society.
