We discuss a series of activities for A level students which can be carried out using the Binding Blocks three dimensional chart of nuclides. The planned activities cover four main sections which can be linked to the A level curriculum; nuclear decays (as seen through the different colours on the chart), medical physics (medical isotopes highlighted on the chart), fusion on Earth (binding energy demonstrated through tower heights) and stellar fusion (which has a limit at 56 Fe, illustrated by the decreasing tower heights).

Temporospatially resolved measurements of negative hydrogen ion density and related parameters are observed in a 40ms pulsed high power helicon plasma source with a magnetic mirror configuration. Exceptionally high negative ion densities of 1.2 10 m 0.4 0.2 18 3 -+ are observed on the far side of the magnetic mirror during the early stages of the pulse. It is proposed that the temporal evolution of the negative ion density into the steady-state is primarily associated with neutral dynamics and depletion. This interpretation is further supported by a 2Daxisymmetric model.

A new control module for the MAST-Upgrade Langmuir Probe system has been developed. It is based on a Xilinx Zynq FPGA, which allows for excellent configurability and ease of retrieving data. The module is capable of arbitrary bias voltage waveform generation, and digitises current and voltage readings from 16 probes. The probes are biased and measured one at a time in a time multiplexed fashion, with the multiplexing sequence completely configurable. In addition, simultaneous digitisation of the floating potential of all unbiased probes is possible. A suite of these modules, each coupled with a high voltage amplifier, enables biasing and digitisation of 640 Langmuir Probes in the MAST-Upgrade Super-X divertor. The system has been successfully tested on the York Linear Plasma Device and on the COMPASS tokamak. It will be installed on MAST-Upgrade ready for operations in 2018.
