Sweet potato is one of the most important staple food crops consumed in Kenya and throughout Africa but yields are greatly reduced by plant parasitic nematodes (PPN). The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of PPN in Kenyan sweet potato fields and their relationship with soil and climatic variables. Soil samples were collected from sweet potato fields in Busia, Teso, Kisii, Embu and Makueni counties. Thirteen nematode genera were identified across the five counties with Meloidogyne, Pratylenchus and Rotylenchus being the most prevalent. There was a significant (P <0.05) relationship between PPN abundance and sodium, calcium and iron. Canonical correspondence analysis of climatic variables revealed that the relationship between rainfall and nematode genera was significant (P <0.05) while maximum and minimum temperatures were not significant. This description of PPN assemblages associated with sweet potato in Kenya and their relationship with environmental variables provides a starting point from which appropriate nematode management strategies can be implemented.
This chapter describes the nematode parasites of potato (Solanum tuberosum) and sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas). Information is given on their origin and distribution, biology, symptoms of damage, spread, environmental factors affecting parasitism, other hosts, disease complexes, economic importance, and management measures, which include host resistance, cultural, chemical and biological control methods.
Rice is the third most important crop in Kenya after maize and wheat. Plant parasitic nematodes (PPN) are a major rice production constraint. The objective of this study was to determine the distribution and abundance of rice PPN in Kenya and their association with environmental variables. Soil and plant samples were collected from rainfed upland and irrigated lowland rice fields in Kirogo, Thiba, Nyangati, Ombeyi, Kombura, Kakola and Mwambe Sub-locations. Twenty-two PPN genera were identified across all Sublocations with the highest (20) number of nematode genera recorded in rainfed upland rice fields. The nematode genera Scutellonema, Hoplolaimus, Ditylenchus, Hemicycliophora, Heterodera, Paralongidorus and Tylenchus were not recorded in the irrigated lowland rice fields while Criconemella and Tylenchorhynchus were not observed in rainfed upland fields. Canonical correspondence analysis of the relationship between soil properties and nematode abundance revealed a significant (P < 0.05) relationship between PPN abundance and potassium, sodium, sand and clay. The relationship between rainfall, minimum temperature and nematode genera was significant (P < 0.05) while maximum temperature was not significant (P = 0.928). Our results provide critical information for designing nematode management strategies in Kenyan rice fields.
Somali ostrich has suffered a drastic decline in its population and range mainly due to hunting over the years for meat, skin and feathers. Urgent conservation measures should therefore be taken to reverse this trend particularly in their current population stronghold, the Samburu landscape. In this range, the magnitude and consequences of human disturbance on the ostrich has not been established. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the behavioural patterns and assess the impacts of human disturbance to the bird. Focal animal sampling was used to establish ostrich"s behavioural activity budget while the magnitude of human disturbance was assessed by determining and comparing flight initiation distances in the protected and partially protected areas. Somali ostrich spent most of their diurnal time in feeding and moving, and are more sensitive to human disturbance in the protected areas than they are in the partially protected areas. The results of this study imply that the ratite does not differ in behavioural patterns from other extant ostrich species and human disturbance is not posing a significant threat to its survival within Samburu landscape. Further studies are recommended for better understanding of the conservation status of the newly published species.
Termites perform key ecological functions and they also cause crop damage. Land use change resulting from agricultural intensification can result in changes in termite species diversity and abundance. Termite species occurring in natural vegetation, maize monocrop and maize-beans intercrop macrohabitats were investigated in Embu and Machakos Counties, Kenya. Influence of soil properties and seasons was also evaluated. Across the two Counties, seven termite species were recorded with Machakos County having the highest number. Additive diversity partitioning of species richness and Simpson diversity showed that, α component contributed to 98.3% and 99.1% of the total diversity, respectively. Population densities of three termite species significantly varied between land use types in Machakos County but there were no differences in termite species abundance in Embu County. In addition, there were no significant differences in species richness between macrohabitats within each County. In Embu, season significantly influenced the abundance of

which occurred in greater numbers during the wet season. There was a significant influence of land use on

C. formosanus
in Machakos with both species occurring in higher numbers in natural vegetation.
Trinervitermes gratiosus
was negatively associated with Mn and positively correlated to pH and sand.
Macrotermes subhyalinus
and
M. herus
showed a positive association with P and silt while
C. formosanus
was positively correlated to Ca and Mg. These findings provide an insight into the effects of land use change from natural vegetation to maize agro-ecosystems on termite diversity. It also provides a baseline for further studies on termite diversity in Kenya and their ecological significance.
