Artikkeli tarkastelee, kuinka teknologinen tiedostamaton (technological unconscious) sopii analyysin käsitteenä kuvaamaan 2000-lukulaista digitaalista kulttuuria sivuavaa ja tematisoivaa kotimaista proosaa. Analyysin kohteena on kaksi romaania, joiden teemoja sosiaalisen median käyttö on: Johannes Ekholmin Rakkaus niinku (2016) ja Sisko Savonlahden Ehkä tänä kesänä kaikki muuttuu (2018). Sosiaalinen media ja muu teknologiavälitteinen vuorovaikutus esitetään molemmissa romaaneissa keskeisenä osana päähenkilöiden arkielämää, ihmissuhteita ja työllistymisnäkymiä. Romaanien intermediaalisista motiiveista, kerronta- ja kuvausratkaisuista, kielestä ja henkilöasetelmista käy ilmi, että sosiaalisessa mediassa vallitsee huomiotalouden tarpeita palveleva normi ja tunnustusten ja suosion tavoittelu näillä keinoin tuottaa monesti negatiivisia tuntemuksia. Lopulta argumentoidaan, että teknologisen tiedostamattoman käsite auttaa tietyin rajoituksin hahmottamaan kaunokirjallisen teknologiavälitteisen arjen kuvauksen olennaisia piirteitä ja sen seurauksena myös aikalaiskuvauksessa näkyviä laajempia kulttuurisia virtauksia. Jatkotutkimuskohteiksi ehdotetaan tarkempaa teknologiavälitteisen kommunikaation esitysten analyysia sekä sosiaalisen median representaatioiden funktioiden kartoittamista myös nuortenkirjallisuudessa.
Mistä kumpuaa pakonomainen tarve olla jatkuvasti läsnä sosiaalisen median kanavilla ja miten nuoret internetissä toimivat? Problematiikkaa käsitellään parasta aikaa suomalaisessa nuortenkirjallisuudessa. Länsimaiden digitalisoitumisen seurauksena 2000-luvun kahden ensimmäisen vuosikymmenen suomalaisessa nuorten proosassa esiintyy tuon tuostakin intermediaalisia digitaaliteknologian kuvauksia ja enenevästi myös sosiaalisen median alustojen ja niiden käytön kuvausta. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan sellaisia kotimaisia, nuorille suunnattuja proosateoksia, jotka sivuavat tai tematisoivat sosiaalista mediaa. Laajan kirjallisuuskatsauksen avulla muodostuu kuva siitä, millaisia funktioita sosiaalisen median representaatioilla nuortenkirjallisuudessa on ja miten fiktiossa suhtaudutaan teknologiseen determinismiin. Deterministinen lähestymistapa hahmottuu monessa tapauksessa teknologiapessimismiksi. Erityisesti näin tapahtuu Jukka Behmin Pehmolelutyttö-romaanissa (2017), joka käsittelee sosiaalista mediaa groomingin näkökulmasta. Grooming tarkoittaa internetin välityksellä tapahtuvaa rikollista lasten ja nuorten houkuttelua ja valmistelua seksuaalista riistoa varten. Kaunokirjallisuus osallistuu keskusteluun sosiaaliseen mediaan liittyvistä kulttuurisista merkityksistä. Nuortenproosan sosiaalisen median representaatiot heijastavat digitalisoitunutta suomalaista yhteiskuntaa. Teknologiaa käsitellään kuitenkin kriittisestä, sen aiheuttamiin lieveilmiöihin keskittyvästä näkökulmasta, joka ei ole yhtä selkeästi vallalla muussa institutionaalisessa keskustelussa. Nuoret kohtaavat fiktiossa konflikteja, jotka korostavat teknologiapessimismiä nuorten suojelutarpeeseen liittyvänä esitystapana. Toisaalta sosiaalisen median aiheuttamiin ongelmiin suhtaudutaan myös huumorilla, ja nuoria pyritään voimauttamaan.
