Rigorous measure development and validation is critical for valid conclusions in psychological science. People with lived experience (PWLE) of psychological disorders, or “experts by experience”, can meaningfully contribute to measure development and validation as well as dissemination and implementation. Despite this, the voices of PWLE are rarely considered, and when they are, it is usually limited to the early stages of measure development. This manuscript advocates for greater inclusion of PWLE in the measure development, validation, implementation, and dissemination processes. We provide an overview of the phases and steps involved in the creation of self-report measures alongside a review of existing studies that have engaged collaboratively with PWLE and offer guidance for how researchers can better collaborate with PWLE. We conclude by discussing the application of community-engaged research in measure development, validation, dissemination, and implementation.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
