Sexual dimorphism in the human pelvis is inferentially related to parturition. Investigators disagree about the identification and obstetric significance of pelvic dimorphism. Benefiting from a large sample of complete skeletons from the Coimbra Identified Skeletal Collection, we show that the dimensions of the true pelvis (birth canal) that are most sexually dimorphic (that is, the dimensions of females are greater than males) are those which are related to biparietal deformation, which often leads to the death of the human neonate. These dimensions are: the anteroposterior diameter of the inlet (index of dimorphism = 108.41), the transverse diameter of the bispinous midplane (index of dimorphism = 117.13) and the transverse diameter of the outlet (index of dimorphism = 112.3). Therefore, sexual dimorphism in the human pelvis is a reflection of differential selection on the two sexes. These results may stimulate further studies with a fresh approach regarding the fossil and comparative evidence for when and how the modern pattern of birth has evolved.
Studies of human mate choice have been based almost exclusively on stated preferences and personal advertisements, and the external validity of such studies has therefore been questioned. In the present study, reallife matings based on a large representative sample of newly wed couples in 1998 (n=66,598) were analysed according to educational assortative mating. The results demonstrate a strong educational homogamy in this national Portuguese sample. However, men tend to marry women who are slightly more educated than themselves. The results are compared with those of a modern society (US, 1940-87) and a traditional society (Kipsigis, 1952-91). Since educational attainment is strongly associated with social status and intelligence, these results are discussed in an evolutionary perspective.
The plumpness of the human newborn has long been recognized as a trait in need of explanation among researchers. Using a linear regression analysis, we find that head circumference is significantly and positively associated with BMI at birth, after gestational age and birthlength were controlled for, in a sample of 1,069 healthy liveborn routinely delivered at the University Hospital of Coimbra (partial correlation r = 0.409, P < 0.0001). This significant association is consistent with the idea that newborn fatness is related to the higher need of lipids in newborn humans as an energetic and plastic substrate during its accelerated brain growth period. As birthweight and birth head size are associated with head size and cognitive abilities in childhood and adult life, it could be postulated that these cognitive abilities could have acted as selective pressure responsible for the newborn fatness increase in our lineage.
