As the fundamental study on the lithium jet cooling for an inertial-confinement fusion reactor and the ECCS spray cooling for light water reactors, the experiment was performed to investigate the steady condensation of saturated steam on a vertical downward water jet. The experimental parameters were the nozzle diameter of 3 and 5 mm, the jet length of 60-316 mm, the outlet velocity of 2-12 m/s, the outlet temperature of 30-70oC, and the pressure of 0.03-0.44 MPa, which corresponds to the Reynolds number of 1.35 x 10 4 -2.71 X 10 5 and the Prandtl number of 1.0-5.2. It has been found that as the Reynolds number and the jet length are increased, the condensation Stanton number decreases and then increases beyond a certain values, and that it increases monotonously with an increase in the steam pressure. From the result and the photographic observation, it has been found that the experimental range can be classified to four regions based on the onsets of jet break-up and surface disturbance, or entrainment, and for each region the empirical correlation for the Stanton number has been obtained. It has been found that the present correlations are consistent with the various previous correlations proposed by the other investigators, although they seemed to be inconsistent with each other.
