Generation of firebrands from a wildland fire and their distribution downwind are studied using an analytical approach. The processes considered include emission of firebrands, wind-driven transport and the associated spot ignition. Emission of the firebrands from a fire front is treated as a stochastic process reflecting the interaction between gas flow plume and the burning fuel debris formed, with the emission rate being dominated by the rate of fuel consumption, emission factor and a function of firebrand sizes. Analogous to the random distribution of non-burning windborne particles, the transient distribution of firebrands downwind is described by a statistical pattern of Rayleigh form. Number and mass of firebrands landed downwind within the maximum travel distance are then determined by integration over the entire impact period during fire spread and burning-out processes. Application of the model to the bushfire occurred in Canberra, Australia in 2003 indicates that this model provides reasonable prediction in the distribution of firebrands downwind, and quantitatively exhibits the role of ember attack in massive destruction of houses at urban interface.

This paper reports results from an experimental study on low-temperature oxidation of a
bituminous coal in an isothermal flow reactor. The rates of consumption of oxygen and the
formation of carbon oxides were quantified by an on-line oxygen analyzer and a dual-column
micro GC. Water produced during oxidation was measured using a drierite absorber. This allowed
detailed calculations of mass balance during the oxidation experiments. It is observed that the
rates of oxygen consumption and the formation of carbon oxides decreased with time, as opposed
to the mass of coal sample, which tended to increase during the experiments. The integral amounts
of gaseous products evolved in each experiment indicate that CO2 production is far larger than
that of CO and the molar ratio among H2O, CO2, and CO production is about 21:3:1 at the present
experimental conditions. It is proposed that the molar ratio of produced CO to consumed O2 be
applied as an index for ranking coal propensity to self-heating and for determining the onset of
spontaneous combustion.
One-dimensional nanostructure materials offer opportunities for improving performance of electrochemical sensors. In this work, vertically ZnO nanorods (ZNRs) sensitized with gold nanoparticles (GNPs) were designed and fabricated onto indium tin oxide coated polyethylene terephthalate (ITO/PET) film for dopamine sensing. ZNRs that helpful for electric signal collecting by providing electron transfer pathways were electrodeposited on ITO/PET film firstly. Then GNPs that possess excellent electrocatalytic activity toward target were decorated onto ZNRs via potentiodynamic electrodeposition. These gold nanoparticles sensitized ZnO nanorods arrays (GNPs/ZNRs) combine the advantages of GNPs and ZNRs, thus providing chance to develop electrochemical sensors with ultrahigh sensitivity and excellent selectivity. Several important nervous system diseases (such as Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, senile dementia, AIDS, et al.) have proved to be associated with dysfunctions of dopamine system. So, the detection of dopamine becomes essential in clinical medical practice and nerve physiology study. When used for dopamine sensing, the fabricated electrochemical sensor shows two linear dynamic ranges (0.01-20 μM and 50-1000 μM) toward dopamine. Moreover, this proposed electrochemical sensor has been successfully applied to the determination of dopamine in human urine with satisfied recoveries (95.3% to 111.3%) and precision (1.1% to 8.4% of RSD).
Background: The association of soy product consumption with the relative risk of cardiovascular disease remains controversial. This meta-analysis aimed at investigating whether an association exists between soy consumption and the risk of stroke and coronary heart disease (CHD) in observational studies. Methods: A systematic search of the PubMed and EMBASE databases was performed for case-control and cohort studies that assessed soy consumption and the risk of stroke and CHD. Summary relative risks (SRRs) and 95% CIs were combined by using a random-effects model. Results: Of a total of 1,266 abstracts, 5 prospective cohort and 6 case-control studies met our inclusion criteria, and comprised 4,954 stroke and 7,616 CHD events. Based on the high vs. low analyses, combining cohort studies showed no association between soy intake and risk of stroke (SRR 0.92; 95% CI 0.70-1.10; Pheterogeneity = 0.236; I2 = 29.4%) or CHD (SRR 0.97; 95% CI 0.74-1.27; Pheterogeneity = 0.020; I2 = 62.7%), although a significantly inverse association between soy intake and the risk of stroke (SRR 0.54; 95% CI 0.34-0.87; Pheterogeneity = 0.001; I2 = 79.3%) and CHD (SRR 0.66; 95% CI 0.56-0.77; Pheterogeneity = 0.421; I2 = 0) was observed in case-control studies. No association between soy isoflavone intake and the risk of stroke and CHD was identified. Conclusion: There was limited evidence to indicate that soy consumption was inversely associated with the risk of stroke and CHD, although further studies, with prospective designs that use validated questionnaires and control for important confounders, are warranted.
