Desde que Foss e Byers, em trabalho pioneiro de 1972, concluíram que osteoartrose (OA) associava-se com média mais elevada de densidade óssea e que osteoporose (OP) e OA do quadril não ocorriam, habitualmente, juntas, muito tem sido especulado sobre a relação entre essas duas doenças e começamos a perceber que a relação entre OA e densidade mineral óssea (DMO) é muito mais complexa e intrigante. Há trabalhos que se contradizem e não é possível afirmar que OA e OP são sempre mutuamente excludentes. Por outro lado, também não se pode assegurar que todos os pacientes com OA estejam protegidos contra fraturas, o que implica que se assuma posição mais cautelosa quanto a esse aspecto. Finalmente, até o momento, não parecem existir evidências de que a medicação usada para o tratamento da OP poderia aumentar o risco de OA, por meio da preservação ou aumento da densidade óssea. Ao contrário, os estudos experimentais realizados até agora sugerem exatamente o oposto.
