An experiment is described in which a turbulent boundary layer was generated along a sloping wall of a laboratory tank containing salt-stratified fluid. Initially, the pycnocline separating the upper fresh-water layer from the lower saline layer was relatively thin; it thickened in response to the mixing as the experiment proceeded. Two types of mean circulation developed as a result of the boundary mixing. In the boundary layer, counterflowing mean streams were observed that augmented the diffusion of salt up- and downslope. This augmented dispersion in turn tended to spread the salt beyond the depth range of the pycnocline in the ambient fluid, producing a mean convergence in the boundary layer and intrusions from the layer into the ambient fluid.The evolving density structure in the ambient fluid was measured by conductivity-probe traverses, from which the net buoyancy flux (or salt flux) and volume flux in the boundary layer were determined. The level of zero volume flux was found to coincide closely with the level of maximum stability frequency N, so that the buoyancy transport across this level was entirely the result of turbulent dispersion in the boundary layer. At other levels, the convective transports up and down contribute significantly. A simple theory provides scaling in terms of the laboratory parameters; in terms of the inferred overall turbulent viscosity νe, the buoyancy transport resulting from boundary-layer dispersion was found to be \[ F_{\rm B} = 0.60 \left\{\frac{\nu_{\rm e}N(z)}{\sin\theta}\right\}^{\frac{3}{2}}\cos^2\theta, \] and the intrusion velocity into the ambient fluid is \[ v_1 = 0.42\frac{\nu_{\rm e}^{\frac{3}{2}}}{N^{\frac{1}{2}}h^2}\frac{\cos^2\theta}{(\sin\theta)^{\frac{3}{2}}}, \] where θ is the angle of the sloping bed. These expressions must become invalid when θ becomes vanishingly small; their application to estuarine and continental slope flows is discussed briefly.

An algorithm was developed to estimate planetary boundary layer (PBL) heights from hourly archived wind profiler data from the NOAA Profiler Network (NPN) sites located throughout the central United States. Unlike previous studies, the present algorithm has been applied to a long record of publicly available wind profiler signal backscatter data. Under clear-sky conditions, summertime averaged hourly time series of PBL heights compare well with Richardson number–based estimates at the few NPN stations with hourly temperature measurements. Comparisons with estimates based on clear-sky reanalysis show that the wind profiler (WP) PBL heights are lower by approximately 250–500 m. The geographical distribution of daily maximum PBL heights corresponds well with the expected distribution based on patterns of surface temperature and soil moisture. Wind profiler PBL heights were also estimated under mostly cloudy-sky conditions, and are generally comparable to the Richardson number–based PBL heights and higher than the reanalysis PBL heights. WP PBL heights have a smaller clear–cloudy condition difference than either of the other two. The algorithm presented here is shown to provide a reliable summertime climatology of daytime hourly PBL heights throughout the central United States.

Heterogeneities in the land surface exist on a wide range of spatial scales and make the coupling between the land surface and the overlying boundary layer complex. This study investigates the vertical extent to which the surface heterogeneities affect the boundary layer turbulence. A technique called ''extended mosaic'' is presented. It models the coupling between the heterogeneous land surface and the atmosphere by allowing the impact of the subgrid-scale variability to extend throughout the vertical extent of the planetary boundary layer. Simulations with extended mosaic show that there is a GCM level at which the distinct character of the turbulence over different land scene types is homogenized, which the authors call the model blending height. The behavior of the model blending height is an indicator of the mechanism by which the surface heterogeneities extend their direct influence upward into the boundary layer and exert their influence on the climate system. Results are presented that show the behavior of the model blending height and the relationships to atmospheric and surface conditions. The model blending height is generally one-third to one-half of the planetary boundary layer height, although the exact ratio varies with local conditions and the distribution of the underlying vegetation. The model blending height also increases with canopy temperature and sensible heat flux and is influenced by the amount of variability in the surface vegetation and the presence of deciduous trees.
