Nanostructured anatase coatings were built-up on biocompatible polyetheretherketone (PEEK) by means of cold gas spray (CGS). Titanium layer was previously desposited, which acted as bond coat between PEEK and metal oxide. Semicrystalline polymer was not degraded during the spraying process and starting composition of titanium dioxide was not affected. TiO₂ was homogeneously obtained onto CGS Ti layer and completely covered the piece. Primary human osteoblasts were seeded onto biomaterials and in vitro cell experiments provided evidence to confirm that nanostructured anatase coatings deposited by cold gas spray improve the performance of PEEK implants.
The electrochemical behavior of HVOF produced hydroxyapatite (HA) and 80HA-20TiO 2 coatings were investigated using electrochemical techniques in natural aerated Hanks' solution in the presence and absence of bovine serum albumin (BSA) for 30 days. All samples presented open circuit potential oscillations, which were associated to the porous nature of the coating that allows the electrolyte reaches the substrate causing activation -passivation at the bottom of the pores. The polarization studies indicated that the 80HA-20TiO 2 coating was the only one that showed a narrow potential passive region from around -0.4 V to 0 V in the presence and absence of BSA, indicating the beneficial influence of the addition of TiO 2 to the HA coating stability. Our results indicated that BSA in Hanks' solution diminishes the stability of the metallic oxide layer present on the Ti-based alloy accelerating the degrading of hydroxyapatites coatings / substrate interface due to its chelating ability.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
