Summary: Candida asteroid bodies can often be observed in vaginal scrapings of colpitis patients. Asteroid bodies are the morphologically extreme expression of the more common phenomenon of building up of antigen‐antibody precipitates on the external surface of fungal cells in chronic infections. Such external cell wall layers are pathognomonic. Antigenic material is present in excess. Antigen‐antibody complexes are liberated into the site of infection in remarkable quantities. The external cell wall layer is liberated from the Candida cells during phagocytosis – a process which can only rarely be observed.
Summary: Cells of S. uvarum grown in calcium deficient minimal medium show a dramatic breakdown in intracytoplasmic structures compared with cells grown in a rich medium or in calcium containing minimal medium; the cell wall of calanm deficient cells appears to become stratified and more electron‐dense in strudure, but no significant change can be observed concerning the antigenicity of the outer electron dense cell wall layer as tested by indirect immunoferritin tests.
C. albicans grow under the Same conditions does not demonstrate calcium‐dependant differences in ultrastructure besides a slight damage. A clear difference between nomud C. albicans and S. uvarum cells is observed regarding the thickness of the outer electron dense layer containing the mannan antigens.
Summary: The host‐parasite relationship in peritoneal lavages of non‐immunized and immunized mice and rabbits after intraperitoneal Candida albicans infection was studied electronmicroscopically. Significantly more activated host defense cells as well as more phagocytosis were observed in immunized animals. By means of ferritin‐labeled antiglobulin, antigen‐antibody complexes covering the yeast cell wall surface in vivo and in vitro could be seen. Humoral antibodies were determined by haemagglutination tests as well as by the indirect immunoferritin test in the sera of both immunized and non‐immunized animals.
