The magnetic properties (spontaneous magnetization and susceptibility) and the Faraday rotation behaviour (at 1.15 μm wavelength) are reported on single crystal holmium iron garnet (HoIG) under fields up to 30 kOe applied along the three crystallographic directions : ‖111‖ ‖110‖ and ‖100‖ in the 4.2–300 K range. The evolution of the Faraday rotation is strongly anisotropic even in the temperature ranges where the magnetic properties are found to be isotropic. For the rare earth, the electric dipole contribution to the Faraday rotation is a strongly temperature and applied field dependent function which appears to be different in the two regions separated by the compensation temperture (137 K).
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
