Am 8. Januar 1937 starb in seiner Vaterstadt Darmstadt im Alter von fast 85 Jahren der langjarige Direktor des chemischen Instituts der Universitat Bonn, Geheimrat Prof. Dr., Dr. jur. h. c., Dr.-Ing. E. h. R i c h a r d Anschiitz. Er war eines der altesten Mitglieder der Deutschen Chemischen Gesellschaft, an deren Entwicklung und Gedeihen er stets regen Anted genommen hat. 1918-1920 war er ihr Vizeprasident und seitdem standiges Mitglied ihres Vorstandes. Delp. Sein Vater war mit Leib und Seele Soldat. Auch dessen in jungen Jahren verstorbener Vater war Offizier gewesen. Anschiitz muchs also in einem typischen Offiziershaushalt auf. Soldatische Einfachheit, auaerstes Pflichtbewufltsein und eine tiefempfundene vaterlandische Gesinnung waren daher fur ihn von Jugend auf eine Selbstverstandlichkeit. Der Beruf seines Vaters brachte einen haufigen Wechsel des Wohnortes und damit der Schule mit sich. Trotz der damit verbundenen Schwierigkeiten legte Anschiitz bereits rnit 18 Jahren am GroBherzoglichen Gymnasium zu Darmstadt s i n Maturitatsexamen ab. Seine Vorliebe fur Mathematik und Naturwissenschaften sowie eine vortreffliche zeichnerische Begabung veranlaflten ihn, sich zunachst an dem Polytechnikum seiner Vaterstadt dem Studium der Ingenieurwissenschaften zu widmen. Sehr bald zeigte es sich jedoch, daB seine schwachen Augen, die ihn auch zum Heeresdienst untauglich machten, den zeichnerischen Anforderungen, die mit dem Ingenieurberuf verbunden sind, nicht gewachsen waren, so daB er bereits im ersten Semester umsattelte und sich dem Studium der Chemie zuwandte. Rasch lebte er sich in das ihm vollig neue Fach, von dem er auf der Schule so gut wie nichts erfahren hatte, ein und besuchte rnit grofiem Eifer die Vorksungen vonBiichner (Chemie), K o h l r a u s c h (Physik), T h i e l (Mineralogie), Dolp und Brill (Mathematik). Nach vier Semestern vertauschte er die Darmstadter Hochschule mit der Universitat Heidelberg, an der damals die Leuchten auf dcm Gcbiete der Chemie und Physik, Bunsen und K i r c h h o f f , wirkten. Mit welchem Ernst und welcher Begeisterung er sein Studium betrieb, das beweist eine von ihm sorgfaltig aufgehobene Bescheinigung aus dem Jahre 1873, d k sich unter seincn hinter1asscn.n Papieren befand, aus der hervorght, da13 K i r c h h o f f ,,dem H?Tm Stud.
