Einen wesentlidien Beltrag zur wirksamen Bekampfung des falschen Mehltaues an Tabak (Erreger; Peronospora tabacina Adam) und an Spinat (Erreger: Peronospora farinosa i. sp. spinaciae Byford) lieferte die Pflanzenzuditung durch Schaffung resistenter Sorten. Die Pflanzen dieser Sorten werden zwar ebenso haufig befallen wie diejenigen anfalliger Sorten, jedodi entstehen makroskopisdi siditbare Sdiaden -allerdings nur kleine Nekrosen oder begrenzte Adernaufhellungen auf den Blattern, die spater zu leiditen Verwadisungen fuhren konnen -hodistens an sehr jungen Pflanzen. Besonders wesentHdi ist, dal^ die Erreger an den Pflanzen der resistenten Sorten kaum, meist aber gar nidit sporulieren. Die mafigebende Resistenzeigensdiaft ist genetisdi fixiert und resultiert bei Tabak vorwiegend aus der Hybridisation von Tabak-Kultursorten mit Nicotiana debneyi, einem australisdien Wildtabak (SCHMID und REISCH 1966), bei Spinat aus der Hybridisation von Spinat-Kultursorten mit einem Wildspinat aus dem Iran (SMITH 1950). In beiden Fallen handelt es sidi um diejenige Resistenz, die bei vielen Wirt-Parasit-Kombinationen vorkommt und im hypersensiblen Verhalten der Wirtspflanzen begrundet liegt. Sie wird in der Regel monogen und dominant vererbt (vgl. VAN DER VEN 1961, KOLLE 1966, SMITH 1949) und stellt, epidemiologisdi gesehen, eine vertikale Resistenz im Sinne von VAN DER PLANK (1968) dar, die nur gegenuber mandien Erregerrassen wirkt, gegenuber anderen Rassen aber •) Herrn Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c-H.
