Intercrystalline stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in high temperature hot blast stoves. After a brief survey of known cases of stress corrosion cracking and today's protective or repair measures, the results of lab tests are presented which provide new knowledge about the course of nitrate stress corrosion cracking. The lab tests are dynamic stress corrosion cracking tests allowing direct simulation of SCC‐attack on structural steels under operational conditions. It thus becomes possible to specifically intervene in the mechanism of SCC. Modifying the factors material, tensile stress, and medium provides a basis for the construction of hot blast stoves not sensitive to SCC.
Comparison of the Material Damage Progression by lntercristalline Stress Corrosion Cracking in the Laboratory and during Service ConditionsSimulation of the stress corrosion attack on structural steel in nitrate containing elektrolytes under practical service conditions. Description of the material damage process and definition of the different corrosion rates which can be deduced therefrom. The laboratory results permit the statement of a minimum and a maximum destruction rate by stress corrosion cracks. The results of measurements during service confirm the findings in the laboratory while the comparable damage pictures during laboratory testings and during service attribute to the understanding of not clarified phenomena of the damage process during service.
Investigations by means of CERT on the corrosion system structural steelhitrate solution have been performed with special consideration of the influence of weld joints on stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility. Specimen with real weld joints and specimen with simulated weld joint structures (base material, course grain region, fine grain region) have been used. Results expressed as relative fracture energy show a significant influence of the heat affected zone of the simulated weld joints but not at the real weld joints. As expected, the SCC resistance decreases in the sequence of the steels 15 Mo 3 -StE 355 -H 11. All experiments exhibit increasing SCC resistance with increasing heat input. Part I1 of this work contains metallographic results and discussion of the applicability of CERT for weld joints.
