Dedicated to Prof. Dr. A. SEEGER on the occasion of his 60th birthday Low-frequency internal friction experiments on a series of Nb-V alloys containing different oxygen concentrations are performed between 300 and 700 K to determine the nature of the V-0 interactions in niobium. The results sliow that the type of interaction depends on the vanadium and oxygen contents. For a Nb-1.5 atyo alloy, there is a single V-0 interaction peak a t N 515 K ( A H T = (135 & 6) kJ/mol) which is attributed t o the reorientation of 0 trapped in octahedral cells consisting of one V and five Nb neighbors. A second peak occurs in Nb-2.5 at% V and Nb-5 atyo V alloys a t = 650 K ( A H , = (177 6) kJ/mol) attributed to the reorientation of 0 in cells containing two V and four Nb neighbors. A Nb-I0 atyo V alloy with 0.61 atyo 0 exhibits a single broad peak a t N 660 K ( A H , = 192 lrJ/mol) caused by the reorientation of 0 in cells containing two or three V atoms giving rise t o a narrow spectrum of AH,.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
