Der Einfluß von Spurenelementen auf die Lebensdauer von Heizleitern, der vor fast 40 Jahren von W. Hessenbruch zuerst erkannt und systematisch untersucht wurde, wird besprochen. Aus den Hessenbruch'schen Arbeiten ist bekannt, daß besonders Cer und Kalzium die Zunderfestigkeit von Heizleitern erhöhen. Auf metallurgische Probleme des Zulegierens dieser hochreaktiven Elemente wird kurz eingegangen.
Obwohl die Lebensdauerverbesserung durch Zusatzelemente allgemein bekannt ist und in großem Umfang technisch genutzt wird, steht eine endgültige Klärung der Wirkungsweise jener verbessernden Zusätze bis heute aus. Schon bei der Frage, in welcher Form — metallisch oder oxidisch — die Zusatzelemente wirken, gehen die Ansichten auseinander. Die dazu vertretenen Meinungen werden diskutiert. Eine neue Versuchsmethodik erlaubte es, diese Frage eindeutig im Sinne der Wirksamkeit von metallisch gelösten Elementen zu beantworten.
