Magnetic behaviour of unannealed and annealed Fe‐Al powders has been investigated as a function of field and temperature in the concentration range 0 to 50 at% Al. The magnetization M of unannealed powders (measured at 20 K) decreases monotonously with increasing Al contents up to 30 at% according to a dilution law; at higher Al contents the magnetization decrease is stronger than by magnetic dilution and vanishes at about 50 at% Al. The magnetization of annealed powders already vanishes at about 38 at% Al. M vs. T curves of annealed powders (30 to 36 at% Al) show a maximum at 150 to 250 K. This maximum does not occur in corresponding unannealed powders.
Fe-A1 alloys in t,he concentration range 25 to 50 atyo A1 were investigated between 1.3 ' K and room temperature by Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements. These alloys are characterized by the simultaneous appearance of Fe atoms in two kinds of very different ncighbourhood: 8 nn Fe and 4 or less nn Fe. This fact causes the appearance of strong fluctuation effects obskrved above 30 at% Al. At 33 atyo A1 two kinds of domains coexist, such which order magnetically above room temperature ("Fe,Al") and other with a magnetic transition temperature of about 100 "K ("FeAl"). The concentration dependence of the observed hyperfine fields and the magnetic transition temperature is explained by the decrease of the iron magnetic moment with increasing Al-content, which in this concentration range is not correlated to the number of next nearest neighbour Fe atoms but seems to be determined by the absolute Al-content.
In agreement with measurements of Sato and Arrott, and of Kouvel, we also found anomalous magnetic properties of Fe-Al alloys containing more than 28 at.%. Al. In order to investigate the different properties of these alloys in more detail, we have measured the temperature dependence of magnetization, susceptibility, anisotropy, rotational hysteresis, and coercive force of monocrystalline and polycrystalline specimens (containing 28 to 50 at.% Al) between 1.5° and 300°K. The following results have been found: a maximum of rotational hysteresis at about 12°K, high coercive forces and high unidirectional and uniaxial anisotropy in the temperature region below 40°K, magnetization creeping between 4° and 50°K, and superparamagnetic-like behavior at higher temperatures. These results may be interpreted by assuming the existence of two phases one of which is ferromagnetic, the second antiferromagnetic below 40°K. For T∼40°K, the domains of one phase, and for lower temperatures, the domains of both phases interact.
