Based on long-term studies in the upper rio Paraná basin, in addition to a broad review of literature and other information, we were able to identify 33 species of native fishes in the lower rio Paraná basin that successfully colonized the upper rio Paraná after Itaipu impoundment, that flooded the natural geographic barrier constituted by the Sete Quedas Falls. These species belong to six Orders, encompassing two of Myliobatiformes, six of Characiformes, 17 of Siluriformes, six of Gymnotiformes, one of Perciformes, and one of Pleuronectiformes. Extensive remarks regarding each species, including their influence upon the native assemblage, in addition to comments on other non-indigenous species, are also provided. We conclude that, in spite of its widespread neglected by environmental impact studies, massive invasion of species is a real possibility when natural barriers are suppressed by reservoirs.Baseando-se em pesquisas de longa duração na bacia do alto rio Paraná, em adição à ampla revisão bibliográfica e outras informações, pudemos reconhecer 33 espécies nativas da bacia do baixo rio Paraná que colonizaram o alto Paraná com sucesso, após a construção de Itaipu, que inundou a barreira geográfica natural constituída pelos Saltos de Sete Quedas. Estas espécies pertencem a seis ordens, incluindo duas de Myliobatiformes, seis de Characiformes, 17 de Siluriformes, seis de Gymnotiformes, uma de Perciformes, e uma de Pleuronectiformes. Extensas observações sobre cada espécie, incluindo a influência delas sobre a assembleia nativa, além de comentários sobre outras espécies não-indígenas são igualmente fornecidos. Nós concluímos que, embora geralmente negligenciadas pelas análises de impactos ambientais, invasões massivas são possibilidades reais quando barreiras naturais são suprimidas por reservatórios.

ABSTRACT. Cytogenetic analyses were performed in four species of the Hypostominae subfamily, three from Hypostomus (Hypostomini) genus and Rhinelepis aspera (Rhinelepini). Three populations of Hypostomus ancistroides were analyzed, which had 2n=68 chromosomes, but presented different karyotype formulas. Hypostomus regani and H. strigaticeps, both from Ivaí river, showed 2n=72 chromosomes with two distinct cytotypes. In turn, R. aspera of the upper Paraná river basin presented 2n=54 chromosome. Multiple Nucleolar Organizer Regions (NORs) have been evidenced by silver nitrate staining in species of Hypostomus and single NOR in R. aspera. The observed variation in the chromosome number and the marked variability in karyotype formulas and NORs reveal a certain amount of karyotype variation in the genus Hypostomus suggesting the probable existence of cryptic species with independent chromosome traits. Foram analisadas três populações de peixes identificadas como Hypostomus ancistroides, as quais apresentaram 2n=68 cromossomos, com distintas fórmulas cariotípicas. Hypostomus regani e H. strigaticeps, ambas do rio Ivaí, apresentaram 2n=72 cromossomos com citótipos distintos. Rinelepis aspera da bacia do alto rio Paraná apresentou 2n=54 cromossomos. Nucleolar Organizer Regions (NORs) múltiplas foram evidenciadas por nitrato de Prata para as espécies do gênero Hypostomus e NOR simples para R. aspera. A variação de número cromossômico observada, como também a acentuada variação nas fórmulas cariotípicas e nas NORs, são discutidas, sugerindo a existência de possíveis espécies crípticas com caracteres cromossômicos independentes. Portanto, nossos dados podem ser de grande valia na discriminação das espécies e no entendimento de sua evolução cromossômica.

Summary Cytogenetics studies on Astyanax sp B, an endemic species of the Iguaçu River (Paraná, Brazil) were carried out. The specimens showed a standard diploid number of 2nϭ50 chromosomes with a karyotype consisting of 6 metacentric, 24 submetacentric, 6 subtelocentric and 14 acrocentric chromosomes. In addition to the basic karyotype, all the specimens presented 1-2 supranumerary or B chromosomes in mitotic metaphases. Three morphological types of B chromosomes have been identified in population under analysis: an acrocentric-type microchromosome; a metacentric macrochromosome smaller than the first pair of the normal karyotype complement; a small submetacentric chromosome. C-band analysis shows discrete markings in the centromeric regions of various chromosomes which contrast with strongly heterochromatic blocks in the telomeric regions of the long arms of chromosome pairs 20, 21 and 22 (acrocentric). Heterochromatic block-sized heteromorphism has been among homologues of pair 20. The chromosome characterisitics of Astyanax sp B indicate similarity with other species of the genus Astyanax with regard to karyotypic macrostructure, distribution of constitutive heterochromatin (C-band pattern) and occurrence of B chromosomes. Some aspects related B chromosomes in this species are discussed.

Species of peacock bass were introduced in several watersheds in South America and worldwide, mainly due to its importance to sport fishing, by being a fighting fish. A recent revision of the genus Cichla showed that the species introduced in reservoirs of the South, Southeast and Northeast regions of Brazil are two new species, described as Cichla kelberi (yellow peacock bass) and Cichla piquiti (blue peacock bass), erroneously identified as C. monoculus and C. ocellaris. With the purpose to identify the populations of Cichla in Paranapanema and Paraná rivers, a total of 323 base pairs (bp) of the mtDNA control region were sequenced, obtained from 84 specimens of Cichla in six different localities (Tapajós river, Solimões river, Capivara, Taquaruçu and Rosana reservoirs in the Paranapanema river, and in the upper Paraná river floodplain). The analyses revealed the genetic diversity of Cichla monoculus, introduced into the Capivara reservoir, originally from the region of Manaus (Amazonas State), and spread in the reservoirs downstream (Taquaruçu and Rosana). The occurrence of the same haplotypes in the three reservoirs suggests one single introduction. This study confirmed the introduction of Cichla in the Capivara reservoir and showed the genetic diversity of Cichla in the Paranapanema river.Identificação molecular de Cichla (Perciformes: Cichlidae) introduzidas nos reservatórios do Sul do Brasil RESUMO. Espécies de tucunaré foram introduzidas em inúmeras bacias hidrográficas da América do Sul e em outras regiões do planeta, principalmente pelas suas características esportivas, de peixe lutador. Revisão recente das espécies do gênero Cichla mostraram que as espécies que foram introduzidas nos reservatórios das regiões Sul, Sudeste e Nordeste, são duas espécies novas, descritas como Cichla kelberi (tucunaré amarelo) e Cichla piquiti (tucunaré azul) identificadas erroneamente como C. monoculus e C. ocellaris. Com o objetivo de identificar as populações de Cichla presentes no rio Paranapanema e Paraná, foram sequenciadas um total de 323 pares de bases (pb) da região controle (mtDNA) obtidas de 84 espécime de Cichla em seis localidades diferentes (rio Tapajós, rio Solimões, Reservatórios de Capivara, Taquaruçu, Rosana localizados no rio Paranapanema e na bacia do alto rio Paraná. Os dendrogramas e as análises das populações revelaram fortes evidências de que Cichla monoculus foi introduzida no reservatório de Capivara, proveniente da região de Manaus e se dispersou para os reservatórios localizados a jusante (Taquaruçu e Rosana). A ocorrência dos mesmos haplótipos nos três reservatórios sugerem uma única introdução. Este trabalho confirma a introdução de Cichla no reservatório de Capivara e revela a diversidade genética das espécies presentes no rio Paranapanema.
