We consider vector solitons of mixed bright-dark types in quasi-one-dimensional spinor ͑F =1͒ Bose-Einstein condensates. Using a multiscale expansion technique, we reduce the corresponding nonintegrable system of three coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations ͑GPEs͒ to an integrable Yajima-Oikawa system. In this way, we obtain approximate solutions for small-amplitude vector solitons of dark-dark-bright and brightbright-dark types, in terms of the m F = +1,−1,0 spinor components, respectively. By means of numerical simulations of the full GPE system, we demonstrate that these states indeed feature soliton properties, i.e., they propagate undistorted and undergo quasielastic collisions. It is also shown that in the presence of a parabolic trap the bright component͑s͒ is ͑are͒ guided by the dark one͑s͒ and, as a result, the small-amplitude vector soliton as a whole performs quasiharmonic oscillations. The oscillation frequency is found as a function of the spin-dependent interaction strength for both small-amplitude and large-amplitude solitons.

The dynamics of dark matter-wave solitons in elongated atomic condensates are discussed at finite temperatures. Simulations with the stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation reveal a noticeable, experimentally observable spread in individual soliton trajectories, attributed to inherent fluctuations in both phase and density of the underlying medium. Averaging over a number of such trajectories (as done in experiments) washes out such background fluctuations, revealing a well-defined temperature-dependent temporal growth in the oscillation amplitude. The average soliton dynamics is well captured by the simpler dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation, both numerically and via an analytically derived equation for the soliton center based on perturbation theory for dark solitons.

In this paper, an exact unitary transformation is examined that allows for the construction of solutions of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations with additional linear field coupling, from solutions of the problem where this linear coupling is absent. The most general case where the transformation is applicable is identified. We then focus on the most important special case, namely the well-known Manakov system, which is known to be relevant for applications in Bose-Einstein condensates consisting of different hyperfine states of 87 Rb. In essence, the transformation constitutes a distributed, nonlinear as well as multi-component generalization of the Rabi oscillations between two-level atomic systems. It is used here to derive a host of periodic and quasiperiodic solutions including temporally oscillating domain walls and spiral waves.

We produce several families of solutions for two-component nonlinear Schrödinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equations. These include domain walls and the first example of an antidark or gray soliton in the one component, bound to a bright or dark soliton in the other. Most of these solutions are linearly stable in their entire domain of existence. Some of them are relevant to nonlinear optics, and all to Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). In the latter context, we demonstrate robustness of the structures in the presence of parabolic and periodic potentials (corresponding, respectively, to the magnetic trap and optical lattices in BECs).

Using a time-dependent linear (Rabi) coupling between the components of a weakly interacting multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), we propose a protocol for transferring the wavefunction of one component to the other. This "Rabi switch" can be generated in a binary BEC mixture by an electromagnetic field between the two components, typically two hyperfine states. When the wavefunction to be transfered is -at a given time -a stationary state of the multicomponent Hamiltonian, then, after a time delay (depending on the Rabi frequency), it is possible to have the same wavefunction on the other condensate. The Rabi switch can be used to transfer also moving bright matter-wave solitons, as well as vortices and vortex lattices in two-dimensional condensates. The efficiency of the proposed switch is shown to be 100 % when inter-species and intra-species interaction strengths are equal. The deviations from equal interaction strengths are analyzed within a two-mode model and the dependence of the efficiency on the interaction strengths and on the presence of external potentials is examined in both 1D and 2D settings.
