In the queenless ponerine ant genus Diacamma, all workers eclose with a pair of innervated thoracic appendages termed gemmae. The gamergate (= mated egg laying worker) maintains reproductive monopoly by mutilating the gemmae of all eclosing individuals. Such mutilation leads to irreversible behavioural and neurological changes such that the individual lacking gemmae becomes incapable of appropriate sexual calling and mating. In one population related to Diacamma ceylonense from India, Diacamma sp. from Nilgiri (hereafter referred to as 'nilgiri'), gamergates do not mutilate their nestmates and yet maintain reproductive monopoly. To understand what triggers mutilation, we exchanged cocoons between the mutilating D. ceylonense colonies and the non mutilating 'nilgiri' colonies. 'nilgiri' callows were not mutilated even in D. ceylonense colonies while D. ceylonense callows were mutilated even in 'nilgiri' colonies, suggesting that the cues for mutilation originate in the victims (callows), presumably in the gemmae themselves. This finding should facilitate understanding the proximate mechanism and evolutionary significance of mutilation of gemmae as a method of resolution of reproductive conflicts in the genus Diacamma.
The Smallfin Gulper Shark Centrophorus moluccensis is reported for the first time from the Andaman & Nicobar waters of the Indian EEZ. A male specimen of 785mm total length and weighing 2.34kg was landed by a motorized longliner at Burmanallah, South Andaman District. The specimen was caught off Chidiyatapu, South Andaman at a depth of 250m. A detailed morphological description of the specimen and comparison with previous literature is provided.
This manuscript deals with the Bent-fin Devil Ray Mobula thurstoni for its first time occurrence in the Andaman & Nicobar waters around the Indian EEZ which is a new locality record confirming the range extension of the species to the southeast of Bay of Bengal (the Andaman Sea). A female specimen of 318mm disc length and weighing 2.47Kg was caught by a multiday bottom trawler operated off North Bay and was landed at Junglighat fishing harbour, South Andaman. A detailed diagnostic description and morphometric measurements of M. thurstoni is provided. For the first time this species has been described from Indian waters and compared with the other related species, and so documenting its first occurrence in the Andaman & Nicobar waters.
A highly intense bloom of the nitrogen fixing Cyanobacteria Trichodesmium erythraeum(~7,000 filaments l-1) was observed during April 2013 (for a period of 5 days) in the Andaman Sea, at Lat.10°-13°N and Long. 93°-95°E.This is the first report of this bloom in the open waters of this region. Atmospheric temperature at the time ranged from 27 to 30.5 °C, sea surface temperature ranged from 29 to 34 °C, and salinity values ranged from 32.5 to 34 psu. However, there was no significant variation in pH (8.1-8.3), and DO concentrations ranged from 4.7 to 5.5 mg L-1during the studyperiod. Phosphate values ranged from 0.07 μmol L-1to 0.57 μ mol L-1, silicate values ranged from 1.7 to 2.7 μmol L-1, nitrate levels were very low (0.3-0.57 μmol L-1). At this time, the biomass of Trichodesmium erythraeum was high, indicating the bloom was in a growth phase. An upsurge in water temperature was found to explain the bloom, together with an increase in salinity. The hooking rate of fish ranged from 0 to 0.32%. However, in the study area with the highest density of the bloom, almost zero fish catch was recorded, clearly indicating the harmful impact of this algal bloom on fish populations and their distribution pattern.
The study aims to identify the various factors influencing adoption of e-grocery in India. The factors which have been analysed in this study include guidance for shopping, transaction security, sensory perception while shopping and product assortment and availability. The impact of these factors has been studied on perceived risk, perceived communicability, perceived compatibility and perceived complexity. The interactions have been hypothesised to influence customer's choice of shopping for groceries online. The sample has been selected from the MBA graduates from a leading business school in India as these MBA graduates have joined the program after the work experience and majority of them are married and they are the prospective innovators which will contribute hugely in the success of e-retailing in India. Questionnaire has been administered to 500 respondents and 440 responded. Multiple regression analysis has been used to analyse the data. A thorough understanding of the factors influencing online grocery purchase adoption could lead to the designing effective marketing mix by online retailers to grow their business.
