The intensity of prior cycle ergometer exercise alters the pattern in recovery of maximal short-term power output (STPO). STPO was measured on an isokinetic dynamometer after 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8 min of recovery. Immediately after exercise, STPO fell to 85, 75, 55, and 47% of preexercise values for prior exercise equivalent to 60, 80, 100, and 120% of maximal O2 uptake, respectively. STPO had fully recovered by 1 min of postexercise after submaximal work rates (60 and 80%). Recovery was delayed until after 4 min of postexercise after maximal exercise (100%). STPO remained at approximately 90% of preexercise values 8 min postexercise after supramaximal exercise (120%). STPO immediately after exercise and during recovery was inversely proportional to prior exercise intensity. The recovery curve for STPO was similar to that previously reported for creatine phosphate resynthesis after dynamic and isometric exercise. The absolute STPO regained in the initial phase was not inversely proportional to either exercise intensity or 4-min postexercise blood lactate levels, which suggests that factors other than changes in pH alone may mediate initial power recovery.
One hundred twenty-four male veterans were enrolled in the Birmingham VAMC Outpatient Substance Abuse Clinic (OSAC) aftercare program following inpatient treatment for alcohol, cocaine, or mixed alcohol-cocaine abuse/dependence. Forty-two of the patients were concurrently admitted to a nearby halfway house (HH) while the remaining 82 patients made community-based (CB) living arrangements. Chi-square analysis showed the two groups were matched, p > .05, in regard to age, race, marital status, presenting problem, and referral source. The CB group experienced significantly, p < .05, higher early dropout (40 vs 0%) from aftercare. Of the others engaging in treatment, the HH patients stayed in OSAC aftercare 60 days longer and had significantly, p < .01, more clinic visits. A higher proportion, p < .01, of HH patients completed each of four treatment milestones: education group, psychological testing, psychological interview, and treatment planning/update. On average, the HH patients remained in OSAC an additional 90 days after their halfway house discharge. Although not significantly different, p > .05, the frequency of HH patients receiving administrative discharge status of Treatment Complete was twice (28.2%) that of CB patients (15.1%). It is concluded that concurrent halfway house placement can aid in aftercare retention and completion.
Forest inventory data was interpreted from color IR photography, transferred to base maps, and digitized for machine processing. The data was registered to geodetic coordinates providing the capability to perform several types of dimensional analysis. P,rocessing data by this technique allowed,(1) Spatial or single variable analysis, (2) overlay or composite analysis (in combination with other variables), and (3) temporal analysis. Information derived from this procedure was input for a land management decision system used to construct a forest management plan for 25,000 acres in east Tennessee.
Electric power is carried into the area by the N.Z. Electricity Department over 66kV transmission lines as shown in Fig. 1, and supplied to the Electric Power Boards at Substations as indicated. Figure 1 also shows the estimated location of the epicentre of the main shock and its distance from the principle installations.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
