We give an S-matrix-theoretic demonstration that if the Higgs-boson mass exceeds M, = (8m'/3GF)", parital-wave unitarity is not respected by the tree diagrams for two-body scattering of gauge bosons, and the weak interactions must become strong at high energies. We exhibit the relation of this bound to the structure of the Higgs-Goldstone Lagrangian, and speculate on the consequences of strongly coupled Higgs-Goldstone systems. Prospects for the observation of massive Higgs scalars are noted.
A method for computing electromagnetic properties of hadrons in lattice QCD
is described and preliminary numerical results are presented. The
electromagnetic field is introduced dynamically, using a noncompact
formulation. Employing enhanced electric charges, the dependence of the
pseudoscalar meson mass on the (anti)quark charges and masses can be accurately
calculated. At $\beta=5.7$ with Wilson action, the $\pi^+-\pi^0$ splitting is
found to be $4.9(3)$ MeV. Using the measured $K^0-K^+$ splitting, we also find
$m_u/m_d = .512(6)$. Systematic errors are discussed
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
